Only last week the “Falcone tree” - a tree in the very city centre of Palermo, in front of the house of the Italian prosecutor who was slaughtered together with his wife and bodyguards in May 1992, – was violated. The tree is a symbol of redeem against organised crime for the citizens of Palermo and of Italy; people use to stick messages and letters onto the tree, in a sign of thankfulness to the Italian prosecutor. The discovery of the bare tree trunk last week, deprived of all paper messages hit Palermo citizens: the news found space on most Italian newspapers.
The fact that the act was committed by a homeless woman is irrelevant. Tha tree is one of many symbols that Italy heavily but proudly carries on its shoulders.
