It’s Friday evening and the start of Oscar weekend. As I look out of my window, from high up in the Hollywood hills, I can barely see through the heavy mist and fog. Melissa Leo shocked a few folks when she gave her Golden Globes acceptance speech -- and thanked her Fighter director David O. Russell for "those few hours" they spent together at the Maritime Hotel. When the audience laughed at the implication, she was quick to add, "Oh, come on! You don't know what kind of girl I am!"
So what kind of girl is Melissa Leo?

Director David O. Russell has had a controversial past with some actors -- ahem, George Clooney -- since making Three Kings, but one of his actors from that film has stuck by him ever since. Mark Wahlberg got raves for his supporting role in Russell's I ♥ Huckabees, and as a producer on The Fighter, the actor got Russell the job as a director after Darren Aronofsky dropped out to work on Black Swan. Russell talks about his collaboration with Wahlberg and the rest of the cast.

“The Fighter” is not just a boxing movie. It’s about crazy families, drugs, and loyalty -- and best of all it is largely true. More important, the film is propelled forward by the best ensemble performances of at least this year -- and perhaps longer.
While Christian Bale and Melissa Leo are likely to win the lion’s share of the praise, there is not a false acting note in the film, down to the non-featured players, all of whom seem perfectly cast and add flesh and blood to the story.

Welcome to the Rileys, to its credit, doesn’t conform to narrative expectations. It’s a drama, but a drama on the edge of utter destruction. Kristen Stewart is Allison … or Mallory, depending on the scene . She’s an exotic dancer in New Orleans, she meets James Gandolfini ,he is on a business trip, and we’re off from there.

One might assume that a film with the inviting title “Welcome to the Rileys” serves up the kooky antics of a dysfunctional family at a holiday gathering. Jake Scott’s (Ridley’s son) feature does anything but that, though there is indeed an ersatz nuclear unit at its core.
Rather, the film follows the paths of three deeply wounded individuals as they struggle to cope with the pain and misfortune that have distorted their lives. Though a
bit schematic in the interplay between the characters, “Welcome to the Rileys” has an uncommon wealth of concern for them, and as such, it is difficult not to share the sentiment.

Don McKay (2009) had everything it needed to be a decent movie, but with flat acting and poor (even confusing) dialog it fell short. With a very original plot and a great cast I kept waiting for it to take off. Before Jake Goldberger wrote and directed “Don McKay,” he had only one other feature film on his resume -- and on that he served as a production assistant -- AKA gofor. That makes what he’s accomplished on this film even more impressive. It has the polish of a far more experienced hand and works remarkably well on all counts. Before Jake Goldberger wrote and directed “Don McKay,” he had only one... more
