In this two-part episode, Vanguard executive producer and correspondent Adam Yamaguchi embeds with a task force working to take down Mexican drug trafficking organizations operating in the U.S.
California has become one of the leading producers of marijuana in the world--most of it produced by Mexican drug trafficking organizations. And the proceeds from marijuana have become a cash cow for traffickers, generating greater profits than cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin combined.
"Marijuana Wars Part 1" premieres Monday, November 22 at 9/8c on Current TV.

California voters have sided against legalizing marijuana for recreational use statewide. Should Eric Holder get the credit?
That's what one California Democratic strategist suggested to me on Tuesday night after Proposition 19 had been declared a failure, who cited a blow delivered by Holder in the final week.
Two weeks before Election Day, the attorney general announced that if Prop. 19 passed, the federal government would fight it.

LOS ANGELES – California voters declined to make their trendsetting state the nation's first to legalize marijuana use and sales, heeding warnings of legal chaos and that pot smokers would get behind the wheel and show up to work while high.
The legalization effort was losing by nine percentage points with more than two-thirds of precincts reporting. Backers showed support for the measure by gathering outside the campaign's headquarters to watch returns come in — some of them lighting up joints to mark the occasion.
Supporters of Proposition 19 blamed Tuesday's outcome on the conservative leanings of older voters who participate in midterm elections. They also acknowledged that young voters had not turned out in sufficient numbers to secure victory, but said they were ready to try again in two years.

A 3-year-old boy was killed Tuesday after a woman tossed him from the seventh-floor balcony of her Queens apartment as the child's mother watched in horror, cops and prosecutors said.
In a fit of rage, Xiao Cai, 53, threw Jerry Zhou from the terrace of her Leavitt St. home near 35th Ave. in Flushing about 8:30 p.m., law enforcement sources said.
Cai was arguing with her daughter inside the apartment - which they share with the parents of the young boy - when the fight took a tragic turn, prosecutors said.
"She grabbed the child and then threw the child off the balcony up on the seventhfloor," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. "The child landed on the cement."
The crazed Cai - who has a long history of depression and is on medication - attempted to jump to her death from the same balcony immediately after but was held back before she could take the plunge, sources said.
"She's a crazy person," said a shaken relative. "We don't know why she did this."
"He's dead," the relative said of the little boy. "All we can do is pray."
A neighbor said after he heard the terrifying screams next-door, he went out his front door just as the frantic mother - whom sources identified as Xuyun Zhou - sprinted down the stairs.
Once outside, the distraught Zhou picked up her son's body from the sidewalk and wailed his name, the neighbor said.
The toddler, who would have turned 4 next week, was pronounced dead at New York Hospital Queens.
Cai was in custody at the 109th Precinct stationhouse and was facing murder charges.

The simple truth about America's marijuana prohibition: any law that allows the easy incarceration of any citizen any time those in power want to do it is the ultimate enemy of democracy. With 800,000 annual arrests over an herb used by tens of millions of Americans, it is the cornerstone of a police state.

Adam Yamaguchi is executive producer and correspondent for Vanguard.
Here in California, as we approach election day, chatter about marijuana legalization is reaching a fever pitch. Proposition 19 -- which would legalize individuals to grow small amounts of marijuana for personal consumption -- has fluctuated up and down in opinion polls, and is very much in play in Tuesday's vote.
When Vanguard first began exploring an episode on marijuana in California, our intention was not to highlight the legalization issue. Our focus instead was on the massive business of marijuana -- demanded by America, supplied by Mexico. Whenever I speak to people about our story, I’m peppered with questions about legalization and whether that would stop the violence in Mexico. And the answer is, no one knows.
But here’s what we do know.Adam Yamaguchi is executive producer and correspondent for Vanguard.

When Ca Senate Candidate Carly Fiorina was asked by a user on 10questions.com the following question, “Prop 19 claims passage will generate billions of dollars of new revenue for the State of California. Opponents say public health and safety costs will rise exponentially. What say you?”
She answers, "sending billions of dollars in new tax revenues to Sacramento is exactly the problem…because Sacramento has a spending problem and will continue to spend the money we send them...and that we need to focus all of our energies on growing our economy and creating jobs.”
Fiorina is outspokenly opposed to Prop 19 and legalization of marijuana because of the amount of dollar it will generate for our economy. WHAT?!?! She admits and recognizes the huge financial potential of legalizing marijuana for the California deficit, but spins the answer.
Do you think Fiorina or Sen. Boxer answered the question? Tell them what you think and watch more exclusive election 2010 candidate answers on 10questions.com

The debate over the California initiative to legalize marijuana has formed some unlikely alliances. On one side, some stoners and marijuana growers oppose Proposition 19, while some cops and mothers support legalization.
Californians will vote whether to make recreational marijuana legal on Nov. 2. Currently in the state, anyone with a doctor's recommendation can use pot as medicine, but this initiative would allow local and state government to tax and regulate all marijuana. The debate over the California initiative to legalize marijuana has formed some... more

Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, told Don Lemon of CNN on Sunday, that she supports the legalization of marijuana. Joycelyn Elders had served under Clinton’s administration in 1993. Next month, the state of California will make a decision through ballot initiative whether to legalize pot, also known as proposition 19.
If the ballot polling goes in favor if legalization of Marijuana, then its recreational use will be legally permissible in the state. However, the federal officials have also assured that the existing drug laws will also be simultaneously enforced if its legalization is approved. On asking Joycelyn Elders, that her support for legalization of pot may make the matter worse from bad, she replied that considering the present condition it cannot get worse. She feels that California has too many criminals who are convicted due to violent crimes. Its legalization would reduce the number of non-violent crimes that occur due to consumption of marijuana. She feels horrible when young people are criminalized due to consumption of Marijuana, as it is not a toxic substance and does not cause much environmental hazards. The supporters of legalization of Pot, including Joycelyn Elders, believe that it would raise the revenue and cut the cost of enforcement. Those who are against its legalization focuses on its side effects on the consumer’s physiology. Joycelyn Elders opposes this saying, marijuana is not an addictive substance, and still it is illegal, but alcohol, which is more addictive and responsible for worse physical hazards, has been legalized by the authorities.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder feels that if consumption of marijuana is legalized, then it would be a major “stumbling Block” for the federal partnership between state and local authorities regarding drug enforcement. Joycelyn Elders, on the other hand, feels that it would enable better use of resources.
