GERMANTOWN, Md. --
It's a truck, it's a plane -- actually, it was an earthquake.
Minor earthquake activity that shook many Marylanders awake early Friday morning spawned no immediate reports of injuries or damage, but there was some unique talk around many workplace watercoolers.
The epicenter of the first earthquake was centered in the Germantown/Rockville area, stretching through Montgomery County, the Washington, D.C., area, central Maryland, and even into West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center, the 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit at 5:04 a.m. The earthquake was about 3 miles deep and struck in an area along Interstate 270.
Experts suspect a fault dating back to the ice age may have shifted. Authorities said the earthquake lasted 90 seconds but that people may have only felt about 15 seconds of it.
More activity was recorded near the first location 12 minutes later when a 2.0 magnitude earthquake registered with the USGS. Geologists said residents should be on the lookout for the possibility of multiple aftershocks throughout the day Friday and in the coming days.
