After threats, fears of arrest the lawyer for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani and others in Iran fled the country and is now in Norway. Recently the Huffington Post gained an exclusive interview with Mohamad Mostafaei.
"Was this confession extorted from her under torture?
Yes, that is what I have heard. That she was subjected to, let's say, very strong pressure. And that she was forced to say what she did.
Is Sakineh's case exceptional? Are there similar cases? What are the latest cases of stoning you have heard of or that have been submitted to you?
I have had thirteen clients who were sentenced to death by stoning. For ten of them, I either won the appeal or succeeded in having the sentence commuted to lashing by whip. Last night a state run programme in Iran televised a 'confession' made by Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, were she stated an involvement in her husbands murder and adultery with her husbands cousin. The article also said in the interview she blamed western media for interfering, which observers suggest is a sign of unlawful pressure to confess.
"Her lawyer told the Guardian last night that his client, a 43-year-old mother of two, was tortured for two days before the interview was recorded in Tabriz prison, where she has been held for the past four years

To escape arrest in Iran, the BBC says Mohammad Mostafaei left the country via car, horseback and on foot to reach Turkey, where he gained a year visa to Norway.
Mostafaei is the lawyer defending Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was sentenced to death by stoning on 'adultery' charges and is now feared to face execution by hanging. Mostafaei's family were arrested to pressure him to return, though he said his wife has since been released and he hopes she'll join him in Iran.
"But Mr Mostafaei fled on 24 July, saying his wife would not have forgiven him if he had turned himself in. [...]
Mr Mostafaei said he regretted leaving his clients behind.

Brazil is reported to be an international ally to Iran, with some saying this status means Iran will find it difficult to ignore the asylum comments. Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani who was sentenced to death by stoning on charges of adultery (later reports say it was changed to hanging).
In a political rally President Lula offered asylum for Ashtiani which campaigners are hopeful will save her life.

He added: "I find myself imagining what would happen if one day there was a country in the world that would stone a man because he was cheating. Nothing justifies the state taking someone's life. The Guardian reports on the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was going to be stoned for charges of adultery but still faces an execution by hanging. The article says she's been interrogated in prison to name the campaigners who released her picture and spread her story to the world media.
