After all the trumped-up controversy, partisan politicking, and just plain bigotry they've faced, the Park 51 center is getting ready to open their doors. They're looking for donations in two places.
They're looking for donations for the center itself on their main page (which I'll link to below), but they've also got a Kickstarter project. They want to open their doors with an art installation composed of pictures of children from every country in the world. Their goal is high, and time is running short. There's barely more than a week left.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/park51/nychildren-exhibit-lets-open-park51s-doors-to-the
The way Kickstarter works, if they don't meet their goal, all funding is canceled. Let's show them that there are more goodhearted and accepting people than loud-mouthed bigots. Chip in if you can. Like I said, if they don't make the goal, you won't be charged. And please pass the link around.
And if there's any way to bring this to Keith Olbermann's attention (without flooding or annoying him), please do. He was a vocal supporter of the place when the controversy was active, and I think that if he mentioned it on air there's a good chance they'd make the goal. It's not looking like it's going to happen any other way.
Donations to the center itself can be made at: http://park51.org/donate
For the record, I'm not personally involved with the center in any way. I'm not even Muslim, and I don't live in Lower Manhattan. But I want to see them succeed. I want to prove (to the people of Park 51, to myself, to everyone) that we're a better country than the vocal extremists would have us seem.
ETA: They just announced that if they can get up to $20k someone has pledged the remaining $50k! Which makes the goal much more attainable. After all the trumped-up controversy, partisan politicking, and just plain bigotry... more

The most hotly contested leadership vote of the season will take place next week in the small Siberian city of Khanty-Mansiysk. Delegates from more than 100 countries will choose between two Russian candidates after a lengthy campaign filled with acrimony and allegations of corruption.
The prize at stake is the top position in world chess – president of the World Chess Federation (Fide) – and the contest is being fought between former chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov, and the current president, the eccentric Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, a millionaire and the leader of Kalmykia, an oil-rich Buddhist region on the Caspian coast.
Mr Ilyumzhinov is no normal politician. He counts among his friends the American actor Chuck Norris and the late Saddam Hussein, has made chess lessons mandatory for all schoolchildren during his two decades in power in Kalmykia, and has built the largest Buddhist temple in Europe. Oh, and he also believes that chess was brought to Earth by aliens, and that if not enough people take up the game, the aliens might destroy our planet. Author of an autobiography with chapter headings that include "Without me the people are incomplete" and "It only takes two weeks to have a man killed", Mr Ilyumzhinov has combined his political job with running Fide since 1995.
Mr Ilyumzhinov met with The Independent in Moscow to put forward his platform for the Fide elections, and to share his views on life. First, though, he wanted to talk about his latest grand plan. Perturbed by protests over the "Ground Zero Mosque", he has written to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, offering $10m (£6.5m) to build a World Chess Centre on the site instead. Religion, he says, is supposed to unite people, but of late it has been dividing them.
His plan is to build a 24-storey tower on the site of the planned mosque in the shape of a king chess piece. "Chess is a human activity which brings together the human brain and the competitive spirit. But it's a competition without blood. There are 64 squares, and there is no blood," says Mr Ilyumzhinov. He emphasises this in his letter to Mr Bloomberg, in which he expresses the "dream" that in the future, the only battles between East and West will be "over a chessboard".

No, it's not the mosque planned for construction in downtown New York, but it's awfully similar. Ground Zero in this case is Bekasi, on the outskirts of Jakarta, Indonesia. In the world's most populous Muslim nation, a Christian group is trying to build a church on land which belongs to them.

A religious minority decides to build a house of worship in an area considered unacceptable by fringe elements of the religious majority. Although the country professes religious tolerance, and the group has a legal right to build their temple in said area, they are harassed by radicals and ignored by leaders and officials eager to gain political points.
They've been threatened, harassed while worshipping, and physically attacked on their way to services. The mayor has asked them to move, and of course they've refused.
Indonesia is a secular nation, and religious tolerance is one of the pillars of the constitution which are recited by schoolchildren. But lately the radical voices have been getting louder and more forceful, and tolerance is taking a beating. Although the attackers have been arrested, the government in general has been accused of taking a soft line and not aggressively countering the threats of the extremists leveled at the Bekasi Christian group.
One has to wonder how the anti-mosque crowd in America feels about all this? If it's not okay to build a mosque in New York, then surely it's not okay to build a church in Jakarta? Skeptics may argue that it's not the same situation — that the mosque proponents haven't been physically attacked, and that the location in Bekasi doesn't carry the same significance that Ground Zero in NYC does. And for the most part they'd be right, although the local community in Bekasi apparently finds it quite offensive that a church might be built there, in the same way that some are offended by the idea of a mosque near Ground Zero. It's not exactly the same situation, but the similarities are striking, and it's hard to imagine an anti-mosque protester putting forth a logical argument why the Bekasi church should be allowed when the mosque shouldn't.
And what about the anti-church extremists in Bekasi? If they're not willing to tolerate a church in their neighborhood, then they can't possibly expect to see that mosque built in NYC, can they?

News Corp. physically expands its definition of "ground zero" to include a quarter of lower Manhattan ------Video
Thanks, News Corp., for not allowing good taste to stand in the way of your obsessive crusade against the construction of an Islamic community center in lower Manhattan near the site of the World Trade Center. Today's Post features a beautiful two-page spread arguing that Ground Zero includes basically everything south of Canal and east of Broadway. They illustrate the argument with a grotesque map of the locations of every place in the area where firefighters found human remains following the attack of 9/11.
I am positive that Post editors were distraught to learn that no human remains were ever recovered at the Burlington Coat Factory building that may someday become the dreaded ground zero mosque (which is still not a mosque and still not at ground zero). But Post editors do helpfully note that remains were found a mere 348 feet away from the building in question, on top of the post office around the corner. (What if someone mails Qurans to the Ground Zero Mosque and they pick them up at that Ground Zero Post Office? Why won't they be more sensitive???)
The "news story" is accompanied by a fact-free essay by fabulist Amir Taheri, who actually claims (using his patented twisted, made-up history) that the Cordoba House will be a place for "raiders" to "train and prepare" for future 9/11s.
The Post says they "obtained" the map from the New York's fire department, although what they actually mean is that they clearly created the map, for the purposes of continuing their successful campaign against this Manhattan real estate project, based on data obtained from the FDNY.
And Fox & Friends picked it up this morning, crediting the Post while conveniently using a different, TV-ready map:
Our Fox and Friends hosts, too, were clearly wishing the map showed remains recovered from the Burlington Coat Factory site. They quoted Faisal Abdul Rauf thusly: "Look, the Imam said, this site is not Ground Zero proper, nobody's bodies were found a-- near that location."
The actual quote is: "This is not Ground Zero proper. No one's body is in that location." Which remains true!
Fox Nation was ready with a story about the map, including links to two different versions and the Post's map.
As the Awl's Choire Sicha neatly illustrates, once you attempt to expand the definition of "ground zero" to include everything in the area, you're calling bars and Goldman Sachs and, yes, the strip club sacred ground.
So! No Muslims building anything within thousands of feet of "ground zero," which now means everywhere, as proven by this important death porn map. Never forget! 9/11 is everwhere, and always!News Corp. physically expands its definition of "ground zero" to include a... more

There are plans to build a Muslim community center a few blocks from the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, and some American nationalists are not happy about it. Some of those opposing the construction have tried to compare it to hypothetical situations that would outrage Americans. Since the shock induced by the 9/11 attacks had often been compared to Pearl Harbor, a few people have tried to argue that a mosque near Ground Zero in New York would be just as offensive as Japanese building a Shinto Shrine near Pearl Harbor.
If they’d bothered to do some fact checking before opening their mouths, they’d probably know that there are already some Shinto Shrines in Hawaii, with a couple not far from Pearl Harbor. (There are also some Buddhist Temples in the area.)
Here are two of my favorite incredibly stupid comments about Japan that people have made when attempting to argue against the construction of the NYC mosque:
1) Right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh asked listeners what they would think if a “Hindu Temple” was built at Pearl Harbor, apparently thinking that Japan was a Hindu nation.
2) One of the Wall Street Journal’s readers left an angry comment on an article about the A-bomb anniversary. Here it is [hat tip to Fat Tony]:
“Perhaps we should test the Japanese people’s resolve by attempting to build a big christian church at ground zero.”
The reader is unaware of the fact that Urakami Cathedral is one of the major landmarks associated with the Nagasaki bombing. There were also churches in Hiroshima in 1945, with at least one near ground zero. Of course, both cities have Christian churches today. There are plans to build a Muslim community center a few blocks from the site of the... more

It turns out there was a Muslim prayer room on the 17th floor of the south tower of the World Trade Center, where Americans and other traveling Muslims prayed every day.
On September 11th, 2001, when a handful of terrorists flew planes into the towers, some of the folks who used the room evacuated in time. Others probably didn't.
In other words, there already was a "ground zero mosque"--used by Muslim Americans who were murdered just like everyone else.
So isn't it time we stopped framing this discussion as "us versus them"?

The State Department has sent Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf - the mastermind of the Ground Zero Mosque - on a trip through the Middle East to foster "greater understanding" about Islam and Muslim communities in the United States. However, important questions are being raised about whether this is simply a taxpayer-funded fundraising jaunt to underwrite his reviled project, which is moving ahead in Lower Manhattan.
Mr. Rauf is scheduled to go to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Qatar, the usual stops for Gulf-based fundraising. The State Department defends the five-country tour saying that Mr. Rauf is "a distinguished Muslim cleric," but surely the government could find another such figure in the United States who is not seeking millions of dollars to fund a construction project that has so strongly divided America. The Ground Zero Mosque controversy continues to stir up new revelations.
Now we learn that tax dollars have been used to build mosques around the world (see column below).
And yesterday, Fox News reported that the Ground Zero Mosque imam has rejected an offer by New York Governor David Paterson to help move the mosque to another location. What does this tell us about the imam’s alleged commitment to interfaith bridge building? About his “sensitivity”?
A CNN poll this week revealed that 68% of American voters now oppose the Ground Zero Mosque! Driven by new revelations and increasing media coverage, this is an increase of nearly 10 points in the past 30 days. For example, since April Brigitte Gabriel has conducted nearly 200 radio and TV interviews about the Ground Zero Mosque! The rising opposition of public opinion certainly contributed to Paterson’s decision to try to mediate a solution and get the mosque moved. http://www.actforamerica.org/index.php/learn/email-archives/2050-your-tax-dollars-building-mosques http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/aug/10/tax-dollars-to-build-mosques/The State Department has sent Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf - the mastermind of the Ground... more

He's the religious leader of the planned, controversial Ground Zero mosque -- but across the Hudson, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is known as a slumlord.
At buildings in Union City and Palisades Park, where Rauf reportedly got tax dollars to renovate low-income apartments, tenants yesterday said their gripes about their lousy housing conditions have been ignored. The Record newspaper of Hackensack reported that Rauf won taxpayer-funded support for his New Jersey buildings from powerful politicians in the state, including Sen. Bob Menendez when he was the mayor of Union City.
Nothing gets done. We have to go through City Hall to get things done. . . . He doesn't care about his tenants," she said.
Barillas said that bedbugs plague the building -- but that when she tried to get building managers to respond, they claimed they didn't have the money to hire an exterminator.
Tenant Vilma Then chided Rauf as greedy.
"All he likes is money," she said. "Nothing ever gets fixed. I complain to the super, and all he says is that he has the same problem."
Vilma Then said she lived at Rauf's building around the corner until a fire forced her to move to 2206 Central Ave. She said her current situation is similar to her old digs, where she had a stove that was more like "a roach den."

My first whiff of the news was an unsettling email from a reader of my article, ‘Ground Zero Mosque’ inflating Islamophobia, indicating The Council on Foreign Relations, i.e. the Rockefeller Globalist cabal, had a hand in this. The writer was annoyed at my not considering it.
I hadn’t considered it since my focus had been on the fact that the destruction of 9/11 was not perpetrated by Muslim nations as stated categorically by the New York Post, ignoring the very possible involvement of Israel, which has a history of false-flag attacks.
I received a second email from the Corbett Report, a video report whose Sunday stories were the Ground Zero Mosque Distraction, Israel Lobby, Apple and Orwell, the first with some fascinating information about Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, who heads up the Cordoba Initiative, i.e., the building of the Ground Zero Islamic center. Eureka!
The Cordoba Initiative, and Imam Rauf, Corbett went on to say, were affiliated with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and support for that came from fellow Council on Foreign Relations’ members. Imam Rauf himself was on the Council on Foreign Relations’ Religious Advisory Committee. The Cordoba initiative’s website cited “Christian support for the Cordoba House” from a Christian publication, “Sojourners,” which is owned by evangelical Christian writer and political activist Jim Wallis, also a sitting member of the CFR’s Religious Advisory Committee. Wow!
At some point, the American Society for Muslim Advancement (asma.org) was shown on the screen along with: “Our Supporters: U.S. Foundations.” After wincing, I froze the frame and downloaded the list, which included the Carnegie Corporations of New York, Rockefeller Brothers, Rockefeller Philanthropy, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Henry Luce Foundation, and Hunt Alternatives, to mention a few of the globalist pack.
There was also a clip of David Rockefeller speechifying at the CFR and welcoming back Dick Cheney to a meeting. Of course, Cheney remarked that he was happy to be there, was once “director” of the organization though he didn’t mention it when he was running for Congress from his native Wyoming. This drew a big laugh from the elite insiders present.
Next Corbett referred to Nancy Pelosi, who had recently questioned who was funding the Cordoba Initiative given how it was being politicized (at Democratic expense given Obama’s “for it but not where” statements). We cut to a call from Pelosi for an investigation. We cut back to Corbett who pointed out that it was rather embarrassing for her and others when the information above was revealed; that this money was not coming from Muslims or Middle Eastern nations.
This despite a scene, in which a Cordoba employee claimed to an inquiring reporter that the money came from Muslims, corporations, and interested groups, and that it wasn’t really necessary for everyone to know who contributed.
Corbett, having discredited the claim of Muslim funding rather thoroughly, moved on to several related stories, including Israel’s spending some $35 million dollars to control articles favorable to it in the US press and to tamp down the negative press on Dimona and Palestine.
He also mentioned the $50,000 given to the Atlantic monthly to write an attack piece on Iran, because it was the “greatest threat to Israel since Hitler.” Parenthetically, the writer was a former member of the Israel Defense Force, which might account for the hyperbole, seeing how it is Israel that has hundreds of nuclear warheads at their nuclear facility at Dimona in the Negev desert.
Corbett’s last piece focused on ideas for coming advancements in Apple i-Pods and i-Phones that seemed to be straight out of Orwell’s 1984, forecasting coming police-friendly improvements/intrusions on every conceivable form of personal privacy from Apple.
I also took a step back to corroborate Rauf’s deep ties to the CFR, seeing how the NY Post had painted him more as a co-conspirator with al-Qaeda, writing, “Clearly, though this is a complicated issue. The 9/11 mass murder, after all, was committed in the name of Islam.”
That explosive statement was followed by a quote from a letter by Dan Senor of the Council on Foreign Relations in the Wall Street Journal (also owned by Rupert Murdoch, owner of the New York Post) that whatever the stated goals of the Islamic center and Rauf, “in the minds of many who are swayed by the most radical interpretations of Islam . . . it will be celebrated as a Muslim monument erected on the site of a great Muslim ‘military victory.’” And . . .”that’s why the question of who precisely will pay to build the $100 million project is so compelling.” Amazing!
Here is a CFR member, whose organization is bankrolling the Islamic center with one hat on, switches hats and demands to know precisely who will pay to cough up the $100 million. Well, Dan, it’s your very own CFR sponsors who are picking up the tab. And if you think Corbett and I are the only ones who caught you with your two hats on, and your pants down, let me go to writer Steve Watson of PrisonPlanet.com, who wrote pretty much the same thing in Ground Zero Mosque Imam is Globalist Stooge.
“The Imam of the now infamous “ground zero mosque” is a member of the ultra elitist Council On Foreign Relations and receives financial backing from powerful globalist sources including the Rockefellers, the Carnegie Corporation and the Ford Foundation.
“This information provides a compelling backdrop to the theory that the move to establish the mosque is a deliberate attempt to further stoke religious tensions and and divert attention away from the real enemy of free humanity, the corporate globalist elite who continue to profit from global war and division.”
Meanwhile, Americans all over the country, especially in lower New York City, are out in droves screaming at each other in fear over Muslim appropriation of the building site, feeling as if Muslims were at their doors with scimitars, when, in fact, it’s our own Council on Foreign Relations whipping up the synthetic terror. Doesn’t that point, too, to CFR involvement in the 9/11 event, producing the same feelings?
As to the “Globalist stooge” Rauf, I’m sure there’s a special place in hell for him, betraying his Muslim community to the danger of angry Americans to the synthetic terror threat, and frightening the latter to even more debilitating scare tactics. Let’s hope this doesn’t spill into the 9/11 commemoration ceremonies or the coinciding 9/11 As Inside Job rally that parallels them. Perhaps, if Rauf and the CFR are sufficiently exposed, that claim will have more meaning for more people than ever.My first whiff of the news was an unsettling email from a reader of my article,... more

Anti-semitism?
Crazy Daisy, Rauf the Radical’s, sidekick should hafta wash her mouth out with soap the Nazis made of Jewish skin.
How dare she mention Jews at all– coming from the most anti-semitic ideology on the face of the planet outside of Nazism?
Let us jus peruse the good ole Koooooooooooran yet again.
Insights bout Jews and Christians:
Bear with me sweet friends with the quotes here:
Just skim so you don’t puke
2.61 Wretchedness and baseness were stamped on the Jews and they were visited with wrath from Allah.
2.65 And ye know of those of you who broke the Sabbath, how We said unto them: Be ye apes, despised and hated!
2:96 Jews are the greediest of all humankind. They’d like to live 1000 years. But they are going to hell.
4:160-1 For the wrongdoing Jews, Allah has prepared a painful doom.
4.16 And for the evildoing of the Jews, we have forbidden them from some good things that were previously permitted them.
5.59 Say: O People of the Scripture! Do ye blame us for aught else than that we believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed aforetime, and because most of you are evil-livers?
5.60 God has cursed the Jews, transforming them into apes and swine and those who serve the devil.
5.82 Indeed you will surely find that the most vehement of men in enmity to those who believe are the Jews and the polytheists.
7.166 So when they took pride in that which they had been forbidden, We said unto them: Be ye apes despised and loathed!
9.29 Fight against such of those have been given the Scriptures, Jews and Christians, as believe not in Allah nor the last Day.
9.30 The Jews say that Ezra is the son of Allah, and the Christians say the Messiah is the son of Allah. Allah attack them! How perverse they are!
9.34 Many of the rabbis and the monks devour the wealth of mankind and wantonly debar men from the way of Allah.
33:26 “And He brought those of the People of the Book [Jewish people of Banu Qurayza] who supported them from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts, some of them you slew (beheaded) and some you took prisoners.”
33:27 “And He made you heirs of their lands, their houses, and their goods, and of a land which ye had not frequented (before). And Allah has power over all things.” [Merciful Allah asked Prophet Muhammad to confiscate entire properties of surrendered Jews]
62:5 A hypocritical Jew looks like an ass carrying books. Those who deny the revelations of Allah are ugly.
[62:6] Say, “O you who are Jewish, if you claim that you are GOD’s chosen, to the exclusion of all other people, then you should long for death if you are truthful!”!
