Cel-Man Iller Interviews Westley Of Impolite Society
Recently, I came across the idea that I wanted to try to expand my music collaberations a little more and came across someone who most would actually think that, off of the relation we have and the reason as to why we are connected, I would despise but no. Westley is an emcee from Chicago, Illi. I recently got a hold of some of his music along with his, half owned group, Impolie Society which I will leave linxXx to, and at first I spoke of just helping produce them and/or maybe just publicating the wav's. Then as I got to the last song on the CD I had I knew that this was someone I might want to work with a bit and actually do a it more.
Cel-Man Iller:
Too start off, how old were you when you started rapping and be honest, did your rhymes bite the dust back then?
Westley:
Ha, well, I started writing poetry when I was I kid, as my mother did before me. It evolved into rhyming around...fourteen or so. Most of that shit was trash city. I wrote my first decent one at maybe sixteen, which is when I started letting people hear em. Been getting better ever since.
CMI:
Who are the current artist your bumping in your headphones on the daily?
Wes:
I listen to a lotta stuff. To name a few....Little Dragon, Cecil Otter, Aesop Rock, Tyler The Creator, Dipset....uhhh, I listen to a lot of music on a daily basis. Devin The Dude, Currency, The Cool Kids, Freddie Gibbs, UGK.....Corrine Bailey Rae, Amy Winehouse, Adele....that's what I've been listening to this week.
And Cage. Lots of Cage.
CMI:
Who did you grow up listening to that influenced your style of hip-hop
Wes:
I grew up in church. I'm an ex-pastor's kid, and wasn't allowed to listen to music that wasn't about jesus til I was like thirteen. Then after that, Eminem and Lupe all day, though both are dead to me now.
CMI:
With that being said, how do you feel about the "new" Eminem and his appearance worth in recent songs?
Wes:
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaan, don't even get me started. Dude is trash to me now. he's just plain whack now. He's off beat and corny. He's officially a regular white rapper to me now. Sadness. And he was my favorite favorite. From Infinite.
CMI:
Yes, Infinite was a masterpiece, I actually dedicated a mix tape to that album. But I do agree with you.
Wes:
It was my inspiration, for real. Infinite is what made me take rapping seriously.
CMI:
What's your take on Lupe's recent L.A.S.E.R.S?
Wes:
L.A.S.E.R.S. was terrible to me as well. I actually had this really big debate about it the other day on my wall. Peep it.
http://www.facebook....s/1648184841504 (Lupe Debate)
CMI:
Your style of rap on certain songs such as "Chill" are more on the alternative side of hip-hop your rhyming seems, is that the audience your reaching out to or are you going for a more mainstream approach?
Wes:
Eff the mainstream, in the traditional sense at least. I just wanna make dope shit that hopefully, eventually, everyone will appreciate. But as far as making mainstream music, never ever, unless it's as a joke, in which case I use a different name...
http://www.mediafire...5nvs7rh0gqisf3b (Impolite Society - Chill Download)
CMI:
Understandable and I respect you for that. Don't be a sell out dude. Don't.
Wes:
Word, you don't either man. That's the problem. To many doin it for the wrong reasons and for the wrong people. And the fact that most people are idiots
CMI:
If there was a message you ould relay through your raps, what would you be trying to say and if so what are you promoting?
Wes:
The messages vary from song to song, but the overall theme is probably, "we like being us, we're cool, you be cool, don't be an idiot, and we don't really give a fuck about most things, unless they threaten us, in which case we'll fuck you up."
CMI:
XD Some true ride or diers eh?
Wes:
Ha, yeah, you could say that.
CMI:
Are there any artist you'll be new to working with that your looking forward to working with for the first time, and lastly, before the interview you said you were in the studio cooking up some new deals. What are you working on now? Any new projects? Are you more so working on others mixtapes or are you more focused on Impolite Society's success at the moment?
Wes:
Well, besides our collaboration, which I'm pretty excited to see how it turns out, we're collaborating a lot with a bunch of Chicago artists, such as Mic Terror, Sulaimon, Pugz Atomz, E3 and Verse NYB, amongst others. Also we're doin a bit of work with a couple west coasters as well.
And I'm pretty focused on Impolite Society as well, though I'm doing the odd engineering gig on the side, and some A&R type work.
So far the only things we've discussed working on is a "Chill Remix" featuring yours truly, C to E. But there is more on the way from these cats from Chicago and we'll be trying to keep up every step of the way.
