“Loom” is a brilliant, award-winning five-minute CGI short film, made by students at the German design and storytelling collective Polynoid. Blending a variety of aesthetic and cultural influences, Polynoid’s multifaceted creative vision is nourished by interests in graffiti, nature, graphic novels, science and philosophy. With a rich observational eye for detail, Polynoid has established a strong visual language all of its own. Polynoid’s narrative technique combines new forms of storytelling with a shared interest in progressive sound design to create a minimalist, photo-real and abstract sensory experience.
“Loom” won The Best In Show at Siggraph, 2010, and just recently won the Best Animated Movie Award at Sehsüchte 2011 in Potsdam, Germany. Loom explores natural causal cycles through the visual metaphor of a moth caught in a spider’s web. The story of the moth’s drowning reveals a larger range of thematic concerns about life and death from a tale told on a micro scale.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, as well as the full HD-version of this acclaimed animated short film.

“Matatoro” is a gorgeous, delightfully weird animated short film directed by Mauro Carraro, Raphaël Calamote, Jérémy Pasquet, students at France’s Supinfocom. The directors describe their work as a reinvention and reinterpretation of the hermetic world of the bullfighting: the fighter, the bull, and the audience. They continue upon the Supinfocom studio’s theme of experimenting with the normally clean features of 3-D and adopting water-color aesthetics, seen in films like the recent Oscar-nominated “Madagascar.”
“Matatoro” is marvelously strange; it’s surreal, impressionistic, maybe even psychoanalytic. If a prerequisite of great art is in some sense inscrutability, then this animated short is certainly one of the most artistic of recent French student animations.
This piece includes colorful illustrations, as well as the animated short film.

“Kurzschluss” (Short Circuit) is a delightful, bittersweet 3D-animated short film by German animators Miriam Frank, Georg Utz, and Xaver Xylophon. The sad little animated short, which cleverly combines stop-motion and CGI, tells a very tragic robot love story.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution illustrations, as well as the darkly humorous animated short film.

“REDU” is a great 2-minute CGI animated short film by Hunter Gatherer, which assumes a civic role by lauding efforts toward American education reform. As usual, they make it look easy, but think again. Looks can be deceiving. While the informative, production shows signs of simplicity, the reality was quite complex. With over 1,000 woodcut blocks, the labor intensive setup, staying true to the Hunter Gatherer studio credo, remains rough and improvised. Through the mature, restrained nature of the work, the visuals are thoughtfully simple, while its message is made to inform.
This piece includes colorful illustrations, as well as the visually thoughtful animated short film, “REDU.”

“A Gentleman’s Duel” is a hilarious, maniacal CGI animated short film created by Francisco Valasco and Sean McNally from the California visual effects studio Blur. At a wealthy Lady’s grand Manor, the elegantly dressed woman with bounteous décolletage is zealously courted by two crazed gentlemen. A genteel afternoon tea party at the Lady’s Manor quickly degenerates into a full-fledged duel between the two competing aristocrats, both of whom are outfitted with steam-driven gargantuan-sized, fully loaded armored mecha-suits. Destruction reigns supreme throughout the Manor and its gardens, as the two horny psycho-noblemen tear up the Lady’s property in their efforts to win her “boobies.” A gentleman’s lust for life is never to be questioned unless, of course, it involves fierce dueling in Goliath-sized mechanical jumpsuits in a bloodthirsty quest to win the Lady’s voluptuous boobies. Will there be a last man standing? But a much better question, what about the poor damsel?
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, a wonderful slide show and the wickedly funny CGI animated short film.
