Emmy winner Archie Panjabi causes quite a stir as the possibly lesbian/probably bisexual in-house spy on The Good Wife. Fans debate her character Kalinda's motivations more than "is she or isn't she" when she's implied to be hooking up with both a male detective and a female FBI agent.
And after Bill O'Reilly-styled TV commentator Duke Roscoe (played by Craig Bierko) tried to out a lesbian at her law firm, only to name the wrong person, Alicia Florrick (played by Julianna Margulies) asks the enigmatic Kalinda outright, "Are you gay?" Neither she nor we got a satisfactory response.
It wasn't always like this. In The Constant Gardener, one of Panjabi's first big roles, her character provided more answers than questions. As Ghita Pearson, a junior member of the British High Commission stationed in Nairobi, she explains to Justin Quayle (played by Ralph Fiennes) why men have shown up at his wife's funeral with cement. She tells Justin to whom a particularly damaging report was sent. And because he asks her outright, she delicately clears up the nature of the relationship between his late wife Tessa and her gay best doctor friend Arnold, now that both are dead, since Justin mistakenly believes that his wife might have been having an affair.
Now, we can understand Arnold's motivations for keeping his sexuality private -- Kalinda lives and works in a completely different environment, so we wonder why she hasn't come out already. But wouldn't that take some of the fun out it?
