We have all been there, sitting down at our computers after a hard day’s work ready for some jolly Facebook time only to be faced with an uninvited flashback from our past which triggers a mini depression/obsession with your ex as Facebook thoughtlessly says “do you remember this little photo up here on the right of you and your sexy ex, who cheated on you with your best mate, snogging happily on a beach in Spain?”
But finally these situations are going to end as the geeks over in Palo Alto have finally managed to amend the settings in Photo Memories, the tool that flashes up images from picture galleries that users haven’t viewed in a while, including those of the sexy/crazy/weird/cheating/the-love-of-your-life/dull ex.
Facebook said the changes to the Photo Memories feature would “help heal the heartache” for users, but relies on Facebook members “informing” the site of who they have dated and broken up with by changing their relationship status on their Facebook profile page.
This means – shock horror – that all those too proud of their individuality to put a relationship status on their Facebook page are potentially stuck having to be reminded of their exes for ever.
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and chief executive, has long acknowledged the difficulty of using computer algorithms to determine the complex and ever-changing relationships between members of the social networking site.
“You never want to be presented with a list as a user of exactly the people who you focused on the most, and to see a girl you’re flirting with at the top, and an ex-boyfriend next to that, especially when other people might be over your shoulder when you’re using Facebook,” he said in a recent interview with Fast Company. We have all been there, sitting down at our computers after a hard day’s work... more
