On March 4,1966, this quote of John Lennon's was printed in an interview by reporter Maureen Cleave in the London Evening Standard. US radio stations in the south banned Beatles music. There were rallies of boys and girls stomping on their record albums and bonfires of burning Beatles material. John received death threats, and the KKK protested a Beatles concert in Alabama.

Lennon offered a public apology:
John: "If I had said television is more popular than Jesus, I might have got away with it. Well, originally I pointed out the fact in reference to England. That we meant more to kids than Jesus did, or religion at that time. I wasn't knocking it or putting it down. I was just saying it as a fact and it's true more for England than here. I'm not saying that we're better or greater, or comparing us with Jesus Christ as a person or God as a thing or whatever it is. I just said what I said and it was wrong. Or it was taken wrong. And now it's all this. I apologize if that will make you happy. I still don't know quite what I've done. I've tried to tell you what I did do but if you want me to apologize, if that will make you happy, then OK, I'm sorry."

On Dec. 31, 2011 Cee Lo Green changed the lyrics to "Imagine" the most famous Lennon anthem. "No religion too" was replaced with "All religions TRUE." He offered no apology when he greatly angered and offended John Lennon fans around the world. As for millions of atheists and agnostics this attack on New Years Eve was no small accidental omission. It was once again a declaration of WAR on John Lennon.

On February 17, 2012 Archbishop of New York and Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan spoke from the Vatican about a new "creative strategy of evangelization.” He said the recognition that the Church herself needs evangelization gives Catholics humility and awareness of the Church’s “deep need” for interior conversion.

“God does not satisfy the thirst of the human heart with a proposition, but with a Person, whose name is Jesus,” he stated. The New Evangelization invites people not to doctrine, but to know, love and serve him. “The New Evangelization is accomplished with a smile, not a frown,” Cardinal-designate Dolan summarized.

He cited the Pope’s speech for presenting the red biretta to new cardinals: “know that you must be willing to conduct yourselves with fortitude even to the shedding of your blood.” Though Cardinal-designate Dolan jokingly asked the Pope to omit that passage from his presentation, he also said that cardinals must be aids for Christians called to be “ready to suffer and die for Jesus.” The “supreme witness” is martyrdom, he noted.
