The Dissolution of the Universe: Camping's Projected Fear

The hour has drawn near folks. Again, that is. Friday October 21st, the date set for the destruction and dissolution of the universe. The date is a result of the intensive, Bible investigations of Harold Camping. The first date, May 21st, set by Camping, was to be the Rapture of believing Christians from the planet. The second date, October 21st, was the logical (logical?) conclusion for the destruction of the Universe. The Last Day. Of course, we all know Camping's prediction failed on May 21st in the apparent sense; there were no earthquakes, volcanoes, or other strange events. Yet Camping maintained his calculations were correct and termed May 21st a spiritual Rapture. Not a physical Rapture (didn't know there were categories). Only those special folks (and they are out there) whose lataif are opened as channels to the soul felt any kind of significance on that day. I didn't feel a thing. My lataif are completely closed.

I hope the old wizard is in good spirits.

Yet despite the inactiveness of my lataif, I can still relate to Mr. Camping. I can relate to him through the lens of the postmodern, academic study of religion paradigm (I take refuge in God from the accursed Satan). The Christian Science Monitor relates:

'I would not be surprised to discover that Mr. Camping sees this prediction as his life's work, the culmination of decades of intensive Bible study, filtered through the sieve of faith,' said Lorenzo DiTommaso, a professor of religion at Concordia University in Montreal. 'If this is correct, then perhaps he sees in the world a reflection of his self.'

"The world a reflection of his self." So if a human is farting around on the planet, proclaiming apocalyptic judgments, what kind of self is he carrying?

'It may seem odd that Camping's faith remains strong, but apocalypse experts say that doomsday prophets have often built their entire lives around their end-of-the-world views, and that worldview is hard to shake. For an elderly preacher like Camping, who suffered a stroke in June, apocalypse beliefs may also reflect his struggle with his own mortality.'

A self afraid of death. It's a nice notion. Packaged in a clean, easy to understand way that helps us comprehend why someone would hold to clearly wrong, apocalyptic judgments. The man is afraid of death. He sees destruction on the planet, the death of the planet, and the degradation of its people. I can relate to that. All of it.

Oprah Winfrey, You're Still Here? CHRIST!!

I could have sworn that a couple of years ago I heard commercial after commercial that Oprah's final season was happening, but even today when I click the little black rectangle, there she is, still. She hasn't gone anywhere! That damn show is still on and her "final farewell for realsies show" is three freakin' days long this week, labeled: The Oprah Winfrey Farewell Spectacular.

It seems so strange that she would name it after herself being the shy and humble person she tells us she is. I mean she didn't name her magazine after herself ... it's just "O The Oprah Magazine". See? There's no "Winfrey" in there so it's not about her, not at all, except maybe that she is on every cover of the magazine, but that's normal right? Nor is her "Harpo Productions". Sure, they share the same five letters but it's not her, unless you have a "The Shining" moment and notice that REDRUM is actually MURDER spelled backwards. And lets not forget her latest television network OWN. That's just a regular word ... own. It has nothing to do with her initials and network at the end of it. So why in the world would she start branding herself now?

But what does that have to do with her leaving the show after 25 years? Nothing! I just can't stand people who are so self-righteous and braggart-like and claim the opposite. Now I don't mind somebody telling their story of struggle and suffering, but when it comes from someone who has to produce it and shove it in everybody's faces at every opportunity on all the major networks on all the biggest shows, holy F woman WE GET IT OK??? Now granted she does a lot for charities and gives away all kinds of prizes and what not, but let's be honest, those "prizes" aren't coming out of her pocket-book, those are corporations whoring their goods out on the most popular show on the planet and other planets that haven't been found yet. Don't get me wrong, if I had a coffee mug or a t-shirt with our logo on it, I'd have her pimp the living shit out of it on that show and put one under each and every chair. Sure, all the monetary contributions help out well deserved charities, but the more you give, the more you can write off your taxes, and the more your face and name can be plastered all over said charities walls. And let's face it, she's not going anywhere. We're gonna see her all over the TV Scape talking about herself to no end. You're not fooling us Miss Winfrey you silly gal.

So yes, FAREWELL Oprah, fare thee freakin' well. I'm sure you might scrape by with your billions of dollars and your famous friends and your 50 acre estate and your book-club and your television network. We are so happy to be celebrating with you from our 900 sq.ft 1 bedroom apartments, celebrating with you while we scramble to fill our gas tanks, celebrate with you while the economy is taking a dump on all of us, losing our houses, going bankrupt, struggling on unemployment, and barely surviving the Goddamned Rapture last Saturday. Thank you so much for letting all of us get to share in your moment of tear filled happiness/sadness with Tom Cruise and Madonna, we're so lucky. I am now convinced that since the Goodbye-Forever-This-Time-For-Reals-Spectacular was scheduled for this week, the Second Coming of Christ had to be postponed and everybody should get off Harold Camping's case and blame HARPO.I could have sworn that a couple of years ago I heard commercial after commercial that... more

"I want to see Harold Camping prosecuted for bilking people out of their money, for destroying lives and families. I want to see his radio empire dismantled and the people who promoted his lies disgraced and ashamed.

Doomsday prophet and Family Radio President Harold Camping has gone missing ever since it became clear that his May 21, 2011 End of the World prediction is not going to come true. However, a bigger question now looms about the unaccounted finances of the non-profit Christian radio network.

Family Radio, which owns 66 stations worldwide, including in the U.S., depends primarily on donations for its operations. Between 2005 and 2009, it has received $80 million in contributions. The IRS filings reveal that in 2009 alone, Family Radio managed to bring $18 million in contributions, and the total assets for that year was $72 million.

Interestingly in 2007, according to the financial statements in possession with MinistryWatch.com which grades Christian organizations on financial transparency, Family Radio’s total asset was $152 million, including contributions which totaled nearly $16 million.

Family Radio’s asset value has diminished by $80 million in two years. Where has this money gone?

According to Family Radio’s IRS filings, it has paid its 350-employees a collective $8.3 million, or roughly $23,000 per employee.

Family Radio is also believed to have spent $5-10 million towards promoting Camping’s Doomsday prediction campaign.

Camping says he is a voluntary employee at Family Radio and has never taken home any salary.

However, Family Radio is under the IRS scanner as they are required to submit their financial statements in many of their states where they solicit donations. In one such state Minnesota, they have requested a filing extension from July 15 deadline to November 15.
