Source Code has an interesting premise – what if you could go back in time, via by being inserted into the mind of another person for the last eight minutes of that person’s life? It’s a thriller with big ideas, executed by director Duncan Jones, whose low budget Moon demonstrated his natural facility for science fiction/fantasy. With Source Code, he’s been given more money to work with, and more actors (since Moon was largely the Sam Rockwell show). With a cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright, Jones keeps the story on track, and drives it home. One of the many threads in Syriana -- a film which combines several complex stories which all connect, if only indirectly -- is about a proposed merger of two oil companies. One of the Gulf states has just signed a deal to supply oil to China, which upsets a Texas-based company named Connex. Then Connex announces a merger with another company named Killen, which has just signed a deal to drill for oil in Kazakhstan, which should solve the problem -- except for the fact that Killen doesn't have drilling rights for where the oil actually is. Could the Chinese be buying the oil, shipping it to Kazakhstan, who sell it to the US after all, but through Killen?One of the many threads in Syriana -- a film which combines several complex stories... more
