So here's what happened. I wrote this song as a new labor anthem in 2008 and issued it on an album in 2009. But, as much as it was for them, I meant it to be about more than just the current organizational structures for working people. The One Big Union idea, since it was the mantra of the IWW, has for a long time been about the permanent popular offset to entrenched institutional power so often run by bad people with sociopathic motives, aka corporations and faux "public interest" organizations bankrolled by wealthy despots to proselytize the notion that their despotism is a good thing.
Those people, those institutions, have successfully winnowed the numbers of the organized. The Randroids are ascendent in America, telling us that ALL collectivity is heretical communism. But thing about that is, our collectivity is not something up for debate, as viciously as they choose to argue it, as much money as the Kochs, Chambers of Commerce, ALECs and corrupt Supreme Court justices can dump into the message. "Government is collectivity, common sense is heresy, the GI Bill is a communism, rich people paying an extra .02 percent in taxes is theft and violence. You are you and only you, you exist in a vacuum, fuck everyone else."
Except antisocial behavior simply flies in the face of society. We are all a system, which is part of other systems. One Big Union is what cures us of their predations, and what shouts down their sociopathic marketing. It is what gives us a sense of community when financial machinations and shameless propaganda insist we are alone and that we should shut up and pull ourselves up by our own damn bootstraps.
In Wisconsin, in Egypt and Tunisia, in Occupy Wall Street and its affiliate actions around the U.S. and the world, I saw people pulling each other up by each OTHER's damn bootstraps. Look what happened. I saw this song realized anew. Brave people claimed it and made it more vital. I owed them something.
I have never worked in visual media but it dawned on me I really had no choice. I taught myself iMovie and I made this. I hope it is worthy of the amazing things people have done this year in the name of forwarding civil society everywhere.

Dear Editor: The outcome of the Wisconsin Supreme Court election will remain uncertain until an impartial investigation of the irregularities from Waukesha County is conducted. This election had a very high voter turnout, with a narrow margin initially in favor of the challenger. It strains credulity to accept that a Republican county clerk in one of the most conservatives counties of the state accidentally “forgot to save 14,000 votes” from one of the largest cities in her county.
The Waukesha County clerk, Kathy Nickolaus, expects the voters of this state to accept, on her word, that the outcome of the Supreme Court race was reversed based on “human error.” However, her claims are disingenuous based on similar errors she has made in the past and her disregard of recommendations to improve security and backup of election data. The outcomes of our state elections cannot be determined based on the mistakes or incompetent behavior of a single individual. A full and independent investigation is needed to protect the integrity of our public elections.Dear Editor: The outcome of the Wisconsin Supreme Court election will remain uncertain... more

MADISON, Wis., April 6 (UPI) -- Wisconsin Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg Wednesday claimed victory over incumbent state Supreme Court Justice David Prosser.
The ballot count from Tuesday's election has yet to be certified by state elections officials and Kloppenburg's unofficial margin over Prosser is so thin -- a few hundred votes out of an estimated 1.5 million cast -- a recount seems certain. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday the difference between Kloppenburg's and Prosser's vote totals is so small, it may warrant a recount paid by the state under current Wisconsin law.
In a statement Wednesday, Kloppenburg said voters "have spoken and I am grateful for, and humbled by, their confidence and trust."
"I will be independent and impartial and I will decide cases based on the facts and the law," she said. "As I have traveled the state, people tell me they believe partisan politics do not belong in our courts."
The fate of a contested Wisconsin law meant to strip public employees of most collective bargaining rights may be determined in the state supreme court. It was not certain Wednesday whether legal challenges to the way in which Republican lawmakers acted on the bill will reach the court before Aug. 1, when the winner of Tuesday's election is scheduled to be sworn in.
The election Tuesday was seen as a proxy referendum on Republican Gov. Scott Walker's controversial law, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday.
A recount, if one is needed, would be the first statewide in more than 20 years and could cost up to $1 million, officials said. A candidate can request the Government Accountability Board order a county-by-county recount in all 72 counties if the candidates' vote totals are within one-half of 1 percent.
Conservatives hold a 4-3 majority on the state high court, which may eventually be asked to rule on the legality of the union law. Voter turnout was heavy across the state after interest groups on both sides spent millions, the newspaper said.
Wisconsin's last statewide recount in 1989 was on a proposed amendment to the state constitution to allow income tax credits for property or sales taxes, the Journal Sentinel said. The voter referendum was defeated by 1,098 votes.

BREAKING: Republicans just broke the rules to vote against workers.
Help us punish them. We're increasing our TV ad buy in the districts of Republicans who are up for recall -- and we'll add radio and online ads.
Wisconsin Senate Republicans rammed through a bill taking away workers' rights. It's shameful, unprecedented, and probably illegal. We can't let them get away with this. We have to recall the Republican state senators and the who did this.
Right now there are 8 Republican state Senators up for recall campaigns. Progressives in Wisconsin have already gathered thousands of signatures to do just that, but they need our help to get the job done.
Can you help make sure these Senators lose their seats over their outrageous actions by chipping in what you can to the Wisconsin Democratic Party, which is organizing the recall efforts right now?

Secretary of State Doug La Follette said Saturday that the budget-repair bill has not taken effect because it has not been published by his office.
"It's still an act of the Legislature that has not yet become law because I have not yet designated a publication date," La Follette said.
He added the law cannot take effect until he directs publication in the official state newspaper, the Wisconsin State Journal. Normally, a bill takes effect the day after publication.
La Follette's declaration added another twist in the drawn-out drama surrounding Gov. Scott Walker's budget-repair bill, which curtails collective bargaining for most public employees.
After weeks of demonstrations at the state Capitol, a walkout by Senate Democrats and a final push by Republicans to pass the measure, the bill's fate, at least for now, would appear to be in the hands of the courts.
A Dane County judge issued a temporary restraining order preventing La Follette from publishing the measure. But late Friday, the bill was published by the Legislative Reference Bureau, which was not named in the restraining order.
The director of the bureau, Stephen Miller, said Friday that publishing the bill was a "ministerial act" and that it still had to be published in the official state newspaper for it to become effective.
The Department of Administration said Friday that it will carry out the law.
And Saturday, DOA Secretary Mike Huebsch said in a written statement: "Upon the advice of my legal counsel, the Department of Administration will begin the process of implementing (the law) as we are required to do the day after a bill is lawfully published. We are mindful that this Act is continuing to be litigated and we will continue to be responsive to the courts as the law begins to be applied."
An aide to Huebsch said in a text message that the secretary "believes" the budget-repair bill has "been lawfully published."
Huebsch was not available for further comment. The Walker administration did not make a spokesman available to offer further clarification.
Left unanswered were questions on the bill's immediate impact on thousands of state workers.
Increased health insurance premiums and retirement contributions for state workers were due to take effect Sunday, according to information on the Office of State Employment Relations website.
Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller (D-Monona) said the latest statement by Huebsch "is just another example of how desperate the governor and the Republican leadership is to try to circumvent the law and circumvent having a court determine whether or not they acted appropriately with the law."
Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne, a Democrat, filed a complaint this monthto block the law. He claimed a committee of lawmakers violated the open meetings law when they approved the measure, advancing the measure for passage by the Republican-controlled Assembly and Senate.
Republicans said they did not violate the law.
On March 18, Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi issued a restraining order to block La Follette from publishing the law.
"Our position is clear, we don't think the bill was published," Ozanne said Saturday while working in his office in Madison.
A hearing on the merits of Ozanne's case is set for Tuesday in Sumi's court.
The state Department of Justice has appealed the order and an appeals court said the state Supreme Court should take the case. The high court has not ruled.
La Follette said his office is following state statutes that lay out the publication of bills.
"At this point, we wait until Monday to see if the Supreme Court decides to do anything," he said. "We wait until Tuesday for the trial judge to hold a hearing, which is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Beyond that, I don't know."
Janine P. Geske, a former state Supreme Court justice and now a Marquette University law professor, said: "I suspect people will be running to court Monday in an attempt to stop the state from proceeding on the bill."
Geske anticipated that attorneys representing unions "will argue that the secretary of state must first publish" the bill before the Department of Administration can act on the law.
"If in fact the state proceeds as though the bill is lawful and in fact the secretary of state must publish it first, there will probably be an attempt by the unions" to gain an injunction against Huebsch, Geske said.Secretary of State Doug La Follette said Saturday that the budget-repair bill has not... more
