While he’s yet to endorse any presidential candidate, this afternoon Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) came to the apparent defense of one of them.
In an interview this morning, Mitt Romney told CNN “I’m in this race because I care about Americans. I’m not concerned with the very poor.” (See video in left column.)
This gaffe has since been reported by many media in criticism of the Republican presidential candidate.
DeMint, however, defended Romney’s statement later today while speaking with Roll Call.
“I know (Romney) does care about the poor,” DeMint said; “I think he was trying to make a case that they’re taken care of.”
The senator did suggest Romney “backtrack” and clarify that statement, however.
Others are not as sympathetic in evaluation of Romney’s statement, however, stating this morning’s quote only exemplifies the focus of his campaign.

For all of you falling for his "freedom" soundbites, please consider this collection, which tells not just of the freedoms he wants to take away from you, but of his hypocrisy in general:
Ron Paul wants to remove the Incorporation Doctrine. That's the law that makes the Bill of Rights applicable to each state, meaning you'd be at risk of losing the basic liberties you now take for granted in any circumstance that doesn't reach federal jurisdiction. (And remember - he's openly against federal jurisdiction, too, as his "states' rights" argument repeatedly demonstrates.)
He swears he's no racist, but takes donations from openly racist organizations and accepts endorsements from openly racist kooks.
He swears he'll steer the country to isolationism and withdraw our troops, but has had military contractors and even CIA agents working his campaign, and has taken big donations from military privatization proponents of the caliber of Blackwater/Xe. (Small army, big mercenary!)
He claims we don't need the Affordable Health Care Act, and that everyone can find the medical care they need without any such implementation ... but also says "you don't have a right to health care."
He says he's no typical politician and doesn't pull any negativity against opponents in his campaign, but last October spent $2 million in attack ads.
No American has a right to education, Paul says.
(the list goes on - see link below)

While he doesn’t want opinions of his Mormon faith to negatively affect his campaign, Mitt Romney needs to respect other religions first, an opponent says.
Newt Gingrich’s latest jab at his competitor reflects back to a 2003 incident. While governor of Massachusetts that year, Romney vetoed $600,000 in spending on kosher meals for Jewish nursing home residents.
State legislature later restored that funding by bill amendment.
Gingrich told of the veto yesterday at a Pensacola campaign event. “(Romney) has no understanding of the importance of conscience and importance of religious liberty in this country,” he said.
Romney also “imposed on Catholic hospitals provisions against their religious strictures,” Gingrich said.
What remains to be seen is how much influence this latest flashback will have on today’s Florida primary.
Florida sits third highest of the 50 states and Dist. of Columbia in Jewish population (638,635), according to the Jewish Virtual Library, and ranks sixth in percentage of total state population (3.4).
Local Jewish voters indicate this revelation substantially affects their perception of Romney, who Summerville resident Susen Shapiro called “a putz” after learning of the 2003 incident.

It’s too early in the contest to make such a decision, but Mitt Romney is likely to pick a governor as his running mate, he told some South Carolinians tonight.
Speaking with voters in a teleconference call, the Republican presidential candidate said he felt partial to state governors due to their “leadership experience.”
A call participant who identified herself as Tricia from Hanahan asked Romney who’d be his Vice President, stating the topic of running mates was the only category she’d yet to hear from candidates.
“I’ll give you some names I’ll consider,” he continued, mentioning incumbent governors Brian Sandoval (Nev.), Susana Martinez (N.M.), Bobby Jindal (La.), Bob McDonald (Va.), Mitch Daniels (Ind.) Chris Christie (N.J.), and South Carolina’s own Nikki Haley, who’s been traveling the state with Romney after endorsing him.
Romney also named former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and Haley Barbour, who recently ended his last term as governor of Mississippi.
Other, non-gubernatorial candidates he’d consider are U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), former U.S. Sec. of State Condoleeza Rice, FOX News commentator and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, and CIA director David Petraeus.
Romney did stipulate it was too soon for him to name a definite running mate, though.
“Because I’m not the nominee yet, it would be presumptuous to say.”

Okay, Romney's questionable term as CEO of Bain Capital is getting lots of news lately (especially since a couple of companies he screwed around with were right here in South Carolina, which is about to host the third contest in the series of GOP presidential primaries).
But let's not let it continue to run as rumor. Here are the precise, factual details:

John McCain, I lost all respect I ever had for you. And all because of the blatant lies you told me on the phone this evening.
You didn’t get my vote in 2008, but that doesn’t mean I’ve never looked up to you. In fact, I’d always found you to be admirable, honest and foregoing.
Add in your valiant military service, Senator, and I’ve had nothing but the highest respect, if not esteem, for you.
But after all the completely false statements you directly told me tonight, even if you were a brave POW, I’m not calling you anything but a lying SOB from this point on.

Gov. Nikki Haley announced her endorsement of Mitt Romney in mid-December.
The Republican presidential candidate, regarded to be somewhat moderate, earned her Tea Party support because “he knows how the private economy works, how to fix it, and most importantly how to solve problems,” Haley said in her announcement.
The fact that Romney knows how to donate to campaigns might have more to do with it, though.
His “Free and Strong America” political action committee donated $36,000 to Haley’s campaign in 2010.

The top issue in Mitt Romney’s platform is jobs. He’ll create new employment, he swears, just like he claims he did in his private business ventures with Bain Capital. “We created over 100,000 jobs,” he says.
But try telling that to this guy, who worked at a company that Bain Capital acquired. “When Mitt Romney came in with Bain Capital and took it over and eventually shut it down, we lost our jobs – they made millions.”

Jon Huntsman has criticised a video, apparently released by a supporter of Ron Paul, which uses footage of Huntsman's adopted daughters to question his "American values".
The video, uploaded to YouTube by 'NHLiberty4Paul' exhorts viewers to "Vote Ron Paul".
Ron Paul's campaign has distanced itself from the clip, a spokeswoman saying "no one who actually supports Dr Paul's principles would have made it".
Huntsman, a former US ambassador to China, described the video as "stupid" at an event in Concord, New Hampshire, on Friday morning.
"Yeah, I lived overseas four times ... I speak Chinese, of course I do. If someone wants to poke fun of me for speaking Chinese, that's okay," Huntsman said.
"The thing I object to is bringing forward pictures and videos of my adopted daughters and suggesting that there is some sinister motive there. I have a daughter from China who was abandoned at two months of age and left in a vegetable market, picked up by the police and sent to an orphanage."

Mitt Romney's recent Charleston, SC campaign event was supposed to be special.
He had Gov. Nikki Haley, a recent endorser of the Republican presidential candidate, on hand to greet the crowd. He even had the last Republican candidate there at Charles Towne Landing to offer his endorsement.
But that's not exactly what Sen. John McCain said on Thursday afternoon:

Many Ron Paul followers cite an assumed “legal drugs” position as the basis of their support for the Republican presidential candidate.
This evening, the latest endorsement for Paul seems to add weight to their argument.
Thomas Ravenel, the former South Carolina state treasurer who shortly after being elected was convicted of drug charges, endorsed the Texas congressman earlier today.
