An avalanche is the land equivalent to a tsunami, a force so great it will engulf and sweep away anything that comes in its path. To anyone who likes going off the beaten track - on a snowboard or on skis - an avalanche is a real danger and a potential killer.
In our new show Man Versus Earth, experienced off piste snowboarder Sam Branson goes to the US to find out how to survive an avalanche and you can watch him being buried alive in the name of science here.
After trawling the web we have found five of the scariest avalanche videos you will ever see, unless you end up being caught in one yourself.
1. Chris Bilbao gets buried alive for a long time!
The most terrifying account of what it's be like to be buried deep under a concrete blanket of snow. It's dark, you can't see, you can't breathe and no one can hear you cry. Luckily for Chris he wasn't skiing alone and luckily for us he had a camera on his helmet.
2. Skier buried in massive avalanche in Norway
This viking is swept away over a huge cliff and into a bunch of trees. It's a good thing the video doesn't have any subtitles because these guys swear a lot!
3. Compilation of insane riders in BIG avalanches
Some crazy footage here of riders cheating death on the slopes.
4. Avalanche buries a mountain village
5. A British snowboarder caught in a huge avalanche

In this clip from "Man Versus Earth," Sam Branson joins Utah Forest Service director Bruce Tremper for a round of snow pit tests. Checking layers of snowfall for weak layers allows forecasters to determine where an avalanche might occur and help to prevent them from accidentally being started.

In this clip from "Man Versus Earth," host Sam Branson listens as a snowmobile rider named Jeremy relives the day he started an avalanche and got trapped under several feet of snow. Thanks to the quick action of his friends, he survived, but had they taken even a few more minutes to locate his body, Jeremy would have frozen to death.
