Presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s campaign is accusing President Barack Obama of dividing the country when his campaign talks about killing terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden.
In a new web advertisement, President Bill Clinton says that Obama chose the “more honorable path” by ordering the 2011 attack that resulted in the death of bin Laden.
“Look, he knew what would happen,” Clinton explains. “Suppose the Navy Seals had gone in there and it hadn’t been bin Laden. Suppose they had been captured or killed. The downside would have been horrible for him, but he reasoned I cannot in good conscience do nothing.”
The ad goes on to ask if Romney would have made the same decision.
Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul on Friday pushed back by saying the ad was being used to “divide” the country.
“The killing of Osama bin Laden was a momentous day for all Americans and the world, and Governor Romney congratulated the military, our intelligence agencies, and the President,” Saul said in a statement.
“It’s now sad to see the Obama campaign seek to use an event that unified our country to once again divide us, in order to try to distract voters’ attention from the failures of his administration.”
In a major speech on Wednesday, Vice President Joe Biden recalled that Obama had “made one of the most courageous decisions” he had ever seen a president make by ordering the strike on Osama bin Laden.
“This guy has a got a backbone like a ramrod,” the vice president said. “For real. For real. On this gut issue, we know what President Obama did. We can’t say for certain what Governor Romney would have done.”
“Thanks to President Obama, bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive,” Biden continued. “You have to ask yourself had Governor Romney been president, could he have used the same slogan in reverse?”
The Associated Press quoted Romney in 2007 as saying that there would be only “a very insignificant increase in safety” if bin Laden were killed.
“It’s not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person,” Romney reportedly said.
But speaking to Fox News late last year, Romney insisted that “any president” would have given the order to take out the 9/11 mastermind.
“We’re delighted that he gave the order to take out Osama bin Laden,” the former Massachusetts governor told host Chris Wallace. “Any president would have done that, but this one did, and that’s a good thing. I’m not going to say everything he’s done is wrong.”

In a stunning turn of events, last night Barack Obama overshadowed Donald Trump and The Celebrity Apprentice as NBC cut away from the final moments of the show to announce that Osama Bin Laden was dead. In light of this, I suspect that Donald Trump will have a double bone to pick with the President. In an effort to maintain his spot in the news cycle, Donald Trump still has a few more weeks of The Celebrity Apprentice to promote and what better way than at the expense of Barack Obama? Now that Osama bin Laden has been found and killed, it's just a matter of time before the conspiracy theorists start coming out of the woodwork. I'm going to beat them to the punch and offer up these theories in advance. If you are a conspiracy theorist, consider this a favor — I've done the hard work for you.
So here they are, out of left field and in no particular order:
1. It wasn't really him — I mean, they apparently did a DNA test, but did you see it? Neither did I. Maybe bin Laden had already died somewhere in Afghanistan, or was presumed dead, and the US government just wanted bragging rights. The fact that they buried his body at sea means this theory isn't going to go away anytime soon. Photos of his body would help, however.
2. He was actually killed earlier — This possibility suggests that bin Laden had actually been killed quite a while ago, but the announcement was delayed until it was politically expedient, or perhaps until he was no longer effective as a source of fear. It becomes a bit harder to defend when one considers that the raid was quite public and probably witnessed by neighbors, but I suppose that could have been staged to look like the real thing.
3. He tried to surrender but was killed anyway — The basis of this theory is that the US government wanted to avoid a lengthy and controversial show trial that could drag on for years, and simply wanted to kill him and be done with it. Actually, an anonymous senior official has already said that it was a "kill operation".
4. Pakistan knew all along — If you read all the details about the compound where bin Laden was holed up, it should have raised some red flags within Pakistan's government long ago. It was in a military neighborhood for goodness' sake! How did nobody know? Pakistan wasn't told about the operation that killed bin Laden — was that out of fear they'd tip him off and allow him to escape?
5. The date of the announcement is suspicious — May 1st is International Worker's Day. It's also the anniversary of the founding of the Illuminati. But perhaps most conspicuously, the announcement came 8 years to the day after Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech, suggesting that this time the mission is well and truly accomplished.
Some of these theories seem to have some logic to them, but on the whole I can't say I believe any of them fully. The possibility that he actually died years ago while fighting in Tora Bora seems to hold the most weight, in my mind at least.
