An explosion in a military depot outside Turkmenistan's capital, Ashgabat, have killed more 1382 people, according to Chronicles of Turkmenistan. (http://www.chrono-tm.org/?id=3220) Initially, the government denied reports of any casualties or major damage caused by the blasts, which were documented on video by Abadan residents. It took three days for the authorities to admit that 13 civilians and two military personnel had been killed.
According to eyewitnesses, the explosions occurred inside a large military depot. A government commission dealing with the consequences of the disaster found that "fire occurred as a result of very hot weather...[which] led to detonation of fireworks and their spreading to a larger territory, including an army warehouse with Soviet-era explosives."
Six days after the explosion of an ammunition depot in Abadan, Turkmenistan, residents cannot get answers from the authorities about their relatives, feared killed in the multiple blasts. They can still hear rockets exploding, but they're told this is just soldiers detonating any unexploded ordnance they find, Turkmen blogger Serdar Aytakov reports..
According to reports by human rights activists, 30 people, including newborns, died in a maternity clinic and 30 children who had gone to take a computer lesson at a school located near the power station were also killed. Only fragments of bodies remain in these cases, making it hard to identify victims. (Read further at http://www.eurasianet.org/node/63870)
