Her job is exactly by her major, she has her first car and an apartment, plus the freedom to be out of her low-income, bad-economy country. It is 3am in the morning as the screaming from inside the green ford escape gives way to a single loud slap. A few seconds of silence followed by louder screaming, then the door opens and a crying girl in a black party dress and high-heeled boots gets out of the car. Words like “inteligente” “estupida” and “dinero” pass me by as I blink and nod, hoping she would stop talking and teach me how to cut okra. She shakes her head and takes the knife, apparently she’s decided I am too hopeless of a case.
