After recently moving 80,000 single parents off the Parents payment and onto Newstart payments (essentially the dole), Jenny Macklin, Minister for Families, claimed to reporters she could live on $35 a day. The statement made many single parents furious as they now face raising children alone, with a reduction in payments as much as $110 less each week to look after their children and meet their daily costs of living while they try and find another job.
Jenny Macklin was issued a challenge to in fact prove she could live on $35 a day herself, but Jenny did not volunteer to meet that challenge.
Families Minister Jenny Macklin has now apologised for her "insensitive" comments about the Newstart allowance, saying it was very hard to live on a low income.
