I wouldn't say it was a 'smashing success' though it was a first successful foray into a new era of the town-hall meeting. I think it will be difficult in future debates for networks to leave out viewer-created content. Agreed with Scot, the way CNN used the opportunity was much more like a programming stunt than it was a format-change.
Current has investigated the possibility of hosting debates of some kind or another, but I doubt we would have a debate like this in this election cycle.
