Ghost Bikes

sajh
In New York City, every time a cyclist is killed, a bicycle painted white is locked to a street sign by advocacy group Time's Up!, as a visual reminder of the tragedy that took place there.

    • Simple matter of slowing down when you are behind a biker. That small token of acknowledgement could make a difference

    • Cyclists are humans too! Where I live there are no sidewalks or bike lanes. It is dangerous in the city or the country! Cyclists and drivers please..please beware!

    • So sad but such a beautiful tribute, btw shouldnt these people be charged with vehicular manslaughter?

Also on a side note as a former driver turned bicyclist I do have to say that bicyclists often need to be safer and more aware of their surroundings. Ive seen bikers dash in front of cars, weave recklessly, take up full lanes, neglect to signal and wear headphones while riding...the mentality often seems to be that cars will just stop and thats not true. Bikers need to be on the defense and recognize that drivers do not always see us and while one would like to think that drivers will wise up and be more safe, as this pod illustrates, you cannot count on others to be safe...you have to be extremely cautious yourself.

Ive been hit several times myself and am an extremely cautious biker, at this point I just assume that cars wont see me or pay attention. Just last week I had to punch a car (yes punch) because it started merging into me and the woman wasnt looking (she was about to pin me between her car and a parked car).

Both drivers and bikers need to become more aware of their surroundings. Drivers HAVE to start looking over both shoulders when they turn/merge and they need to not be impatient and try and cut around bikers. Bikers in turn need to not weave recklessly through traffic or cut through lights/stops assuming that cars will always stop for them (basically they too need to obey the rules of the road).

sorry for the long rant haha

    • Bikers are quite vulnerabe. Even though all of us have seen them make unecessary blunders. However, for some it is their only means of transportation. We do need to exercise some caution. A car weighs so much more, and is usually covered with some type of metal protection.

As for the "Back of the Bus," back in the day. You have to care, because if there were seats near the front unfilled and the back was Full -. you had to STAND UP!, (while observing all the empty seats
next to your sisters and brothers of the other persuasion, sitting comfortably).

    • I believe this is a wonderful idea. I've never seen anything like it here, but whatever it takes to get people's attention is worth the effort. It is a sad reminder, but human life is so prescious it deserves whatever reverence given it. However there are many careless bikers and drivers. You have a fighting chance in a car, but none at all if you make a mistake on a bike. People complain about the crosses placed at certain spots, reminding them of car accident fatalities. No value can be placed on needless loss of life, ever...

    • I agree, this is rediculous! I live in Portland, Oregon and where we're 'supposedly' a more bike friendly city. I see ghost bikes now and then, and I've only heard of one where the suspect was charged! ONLY ONE! We have bike lanes on most of the streets in our city, and people will cut bikers off getting into the turn lane. WHO CARES IF YOU GET TO WORK FASTER, BIKERS HAVE LIVES TOO!!! I don't pull that BS when I'm driving!!! Hit and run drivers, or vehicular manslaughter - should not be a scott-free crime, I want justice so I can feel safe about my kids riding to school. Is that too much to ask?

    • when my friend Jessie's buddy got hit and he got his own white bike is when i started caring i mean gone at the age of twenty three? just because someone was not paying attention its time for people to take responsibility for their own actions like why not loosing their license for a year.

    • this pod is indeed sad and brings up great points. But I have to say that sometimes people riding bikes are very careless as well sometimes more then drivers. I feel as if everyone is like "I can do whatever I want they will stop or avoid me." This goes for drivers, bikers and people just walking.

    • A few years back a boy on a bike was hit and killed by an SUV just a couple of blocks from my house in San Jose, CA. We were outraged - the SUV didn't even slow down. It was also upsetting there didn't seem like there was any press about it at all, and I never was able to find out if they found the person who did it. It felt like society said, "Oh well, that's a shame. What's for breakfast?"

I'm glad to see people speaking up about this in a peaceful, socially respectful way.

    • what a terrible story, given that the lane had such wideness and placement and yet nowhere to go. bad infrasructure ending in a fatality :(
Ghost bikes are very symbolic and representative of fatalities of the bike community
      - my respects.
I ride near this one often (Emeryville, CA), it is indeed impacting to feel their presence and their spirit around the white aura of the bike :(
