Human-powered Search Engine?

Image

A really interesting article in Fast Company (aren't all their articles awesome?) about a new search engine, Mahalo, that uses humans as the brainpower behind search. Sounds old school...but then pretty darn smart when you start to think about it.And of course, being born and raised in Hawaii, I don't mind the name - mahalo is Hawaiian for "thank you".

    • I still don't know what I think about this. It just doesn't seem like it could possibly be as effective as a WebBot. Then again they do include the results from Google, but then why not just use Google?

    • Couldn't Digg head in this direction too? Ultimately, having a massive social filter assigning value, in addition to a pure data algorithm, gets you something far more powerful.

    • This is along the lines of the mechanical turk Amazon launched a while back. Leveraging human intelligence to do small chunks of work that would take a computer much linger. e.g. SETI or more recently the search for explorer Steve Fossett in Nevada
