A single, open gaming platform?

Not surprising that publishers are asking for it, again. How much longer will there be a console market? Or is that Internet thing the solution.

    • Consoles still have their advantages that PC just don't have.
For example: consoles games just work as advertised. No need for upgrades (usually).

    • This is hard to say – I'd like to think that competition is usually good in this case (see Apple vs. Microsoft), but I can see the challenges for gamers and consumers. For those reasons, however, I don't see this going away – aren't there lots of people out there with an XBox, PlayStation and Nintendo Wii? There is bank to be made.

    • I don't know -- when you think about the breakout hits of the last few years (the Nintendo DS, the Wii) they're precisely the platforms that are the LEAST "standard" -- instead they're the ones that introduce bizarre new displays or interfaces. I guess it's conceivable that standardization could maintain wiggle-room for innovation... but I sorta doubt it.
