Amazon hopes Kindle will spark interest in e-books

Taking its cue from Apple, Amazon.com has introduced a $399 device, called the Kindle, in the hopes of creating a market for electronic books, much as the iPod popularized paid music downloads.

Kindle premiered to Applesque hype, complete with adulatory broadcast interviews and fawning magazine articles quoting Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos calling the gizmo, "the most important thing we've ever done."

    • I've been wanting ebooks for years on at my college. with the price of text books per term in excess of $400 and the sheer weight of them, the space they take up in a dorm or at your home, ebooks (from who-ever) would be a god send.

but of course, the device should be cheaper. i've know about similar products since 2001.

    • A lot of companies have tried to do this and failed. I think Amazon has the power to sell a lot of units but this still isn't the device. Especially for that price! Also it doesnt seem as ergonomic. The buttons should be on the side so you can hold it like a normal book and scroll through pages maybe.

Phillips is making a really cool reading device with a flexible display. This is gadget worthy and might strike a chord with the younger demographics.
