Keeping the Internet Open: Expression Collides with Control

When people discuss the issue of "openness" in the digital age, they talk about fostering free speech and protecting privacy and property rights without limiting freedom of expression. There are concerns that the internet filters imposed by governments and corporations might create "walled gardens" where access is extremely controlled and expression is no longer free. This video about the issues tied to keeping the Internet "open" features interviews shot at the 2007 Internet Governance Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Rio IGF was the second of five annual global events that attract stakeholders from all walks of life who gathered to discuss issues tied to the future of information and communications technologies.

This documentary was produced for Imagining the Internet http://imaginingtheinternet.org , an online resource exposing future possibilities while simultaneously providing a peek back at the past.     • The people who want to censor the internet claim that our vaunted freedom has produced the moral decadence associated with the Western democracies. As an advocate for freedom of the press, I think that a country doesn?t have the right to censor their citizen?s communications or networks, even during times of war. But because many citizens around the world in democratic countries agree with political censorship due to increased global terrorism, freedom of the press has taken a back burner position on the debate. As for Muslim students, the debate over freedom of the press has become all too real. Sayad Parwez Kambaksh, a 23-year-old Afghan journalism student, has been sentenced to death Tuesday (1-22-08) for distributing a paper he printed off the internet. Those in favor of his punishment (cleric council) feel that they are in a ?Holy War? with the West, but unfortunately capital punishment will only send the wrong message to Muslims students about the freedom of expression in a hopefully new global community.

    • Knowledge and information should be free - I say f*(*&*k intellectual property rights when it comes to news and information.

      I can understand somebody wanting to charge for audio and video content that is for entertainment purposes, but news and information should never be restricted or censored.
