Facebook users spawn grassroots protest of Colombia's FARC

"What began as a group of young people venting their rage at the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on Facebook, an Internet social-networking site, has ballooned into an international event called 'One Million Voices Against FARC.'"
Protests are being staged in over 180 cities worldwide to speak out against FARC's use of kidnapping as a political weapon. However, many Colombians oppose the protests, citing that the events do not support the release of kidnapped prisoners or peaceful negotiations with the Marxist insurgent army.

This is a great example of how technology can be used to rally huge numbers of people around a cause. What other causes can you see being affected by online organizing? Also, how can those engaged in online political organizing prevent polarizing communities with their efforts?

    • LOOK!!!! this is bullshit!!!!!! it sucks that so many people is kidnapped, the problem is not just FARC, the government has done SO MUCH MORE DAMAGE!!!!

      IT SHOULDNT BE NO MORE FARC, IT SHOULD BE NO MORE WAR!!!! everytime the colombian military kills innocent people, the Government, THE PRESIDENT URIBE VELEZ JUSTIFIES IT!!!!!

      I am colombian, I am from that same city Barranquilla, most of people that are kidnapped are WEALTHY, THATS WHY THEY GET THE ATTENTION, what about the farmers? what about the children? what about the tortures, please if someone is reading this and you want more information I am more than willing to share it with you. I live in Canada and many Colombians call me a guerrilera(guerrilla girl) or terrorist coz I DO NOT SUPPORT URIBE VELEZ GOVERNMENT, he won the ellections by torturing people!!! there are records, there are witnesses, but if they speak they get killed, the ones that have spoken ARE DEAD!!!!!,

      It is good that people come together, but its bad that they only march for this cause, there are many reasons why all colombians and our planet should march for, the world terrorist is SO TRENDY RIGHT NOW!!! HOLY SHIT!!! AND WHO MADE IT POPULAR? ????
      ------B U S H------- the colombian government supports the u.s administartion 110%, he wants to privatize many schools so a lot of people do not have the opportunity to study, man..its just so much evil....

      Issues always have many sides, this one in particular indeed has lots of them, I stand on the side of the innocent people, not just the kidnapped ones, but the ones that are starving because they are black, the ones that have no school because they are indian, the ones that have no legs because they did not went to bed at the time the paramilitary sent them to bed.

      The Paramilitary in Colombia has special privileges, but they are supported by the government so the government always find the way to justify their actions of hate and torture towards the innocent.

      THE PROBLEM IN COLOMBIA IS NOT JUST FARC!!!

      IT SHOULD NOT BE NO MORE FARC

      IT SHOULD BE NO MORE WAR!!!!!!
