Smart for two official crash test results surprising

The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has released the results of the frontal impact test and side impact test, which both received a "good", the highest possible rating. The rear impact scored an "acceptable " rating.

For a subcompact class car, these results are excellent, and the level of engineering and safety development is obviously extensive.

    • i like this car a lot, it is too bad there is a one year waiting list for it on the west coast.

when they first came out people were paying 29k for em (which is insane)... the car gets 40mpg and the mini cooper gets 34

    • Finally, great engineering is starting to show in these crash tests. Now, if they could only improve the pedestrian fuel efficiency, these little things would definitely take off stateside.

    • So what makes this car "smart"? Its small and safe, okay but it doesn't appear to get great gas mileage or anything. It appears to be Mercedes' answer to the BMW Mini. I used to be a fan but the honeymoon is over.

    • Its a good thing there is positive media on a car that can get decent gas milage. Though I'd prefer an electric sedan....or Tesla Roadster.

    • werrd. I did research on this car as a fake client (advertising student) & it's a common misconception that such a tiny car can be safe driving around, especially in LA. so touche.
after all, the car is called smart for a reason, people.

    • My (now-ex) car was hit by a Smart a month ago.
What those crash tests do not tell you is that as the Smart itself does not absorb the shock on itself (as the front element is missing) it impacts quite as a bullet and the other car gets all the shock. This is lessened by the fact that the Smart is less heavy but ... damn, it hurts!

    • Actually, they do have a limited run of electric smart cars in the UK - they're just a little slower, but have a long range nevertheless.

And regarding fuel economy: The ECC says 50 mpg for the gasoline, and 69 mpg for the diesel (diesel not available in the US). The EPA says 36 mpg combined.
I guess another thing to keep in mind is that as with any other car, it depends on your driving habits, your routes, etc.

But i still think that the safety of such a compact car is an astonishing feat in itself, and there's no denying the fact that its an ideal alternative to sitting in traffic on your way to work by yourself in your Tahoe or Escalade or F-150.

    • From the (pretty damning) NYTimes review: "Its E.P.A. rating is just 33 miles per gallon in town and 41 on the highway. I averaged an unspectacular 33 m.p.g. over a week of driving."

So not much better than my 2001 Civic, then.

    • Really? I would have thought that they would get amazing gas mileage. Still, it's the small, convenient size that I love about this car, can't be that in the city.

    • I really dig this car too -- except for the gas mileage. Seems to me the European Smart Car, a few years ago, was getting much better mileage than the newly-available USA version of the car. Is this because of enhanced pollution-control devices on our version, or what?? This car doesn't get much better mileage than my Scion.

    • Tis is excelent news to help smash the myth that bigger is safer when it comes to pasenger cars. Bigger means more mass trying to crush you!
      Well done Smart Car!
