iPhone 2.0 Worldwide launch on June 9th

A June 9 launch date for the iPhone 2? No surprises there, and now it looks like inside sources are confirming the June 9 date, which is also when Steve Jobs' keynote at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is scheduled.

But Gizmodo's Jesus Diaz has got wind of the details of the launch, and his source tells him that the Second Coming will be a worldwide event -- not just in the United States. He also claims that his snitch, "someone very, very close to the 3-G iPhone launch", says that the current fixed pricing model will be discontinued in favor of a more Euro-friendly flexible price point, one that can shift subject to the markets and the whims of the telcos.

The last point concerns Spain. As we reported this morning, Telefónica will indeed carry the iPhone, and will be launching it along with its brand new Madrid megastore on June 18.

This seems plausible enough. Despite the odd delay, all of Apple's hardware ships worldwide immediately upon launch. And the evidence coming in from around the world corroborates Jesus' story: The million and one one-line press releases from cellphone carriers announcing deals with Apple, for one, and the iPhone drought in the UK, Germany and even the online Apple store, for another. What is amazing is that Apple kept things quiet for so long, considering the amount of people involved.

So far, we count over 40 countries with iPhone deals, and in some of these there will be multiple carriers offering the iPhone. Here's what I believe to be a comprehensive list, not including the countries where the iPhone is already on sale, in no particular order (actually, the order I found them on Google):

    • I want, nay, NEED an iPhone.

The thing is, I have an HTC touch which is a smartphone and does most of what an iPhone does so I shouldn't really be all that enamoured with Apple's creation.

However - low internet speeds, high costs, low quality camera all become irrelevant when I see how lovely that browser is. It's by far the best way to browse the net on a phone.

    • Saladin, first off Macs do have a purpose. They are graphics workhorses. If you want to use Photochop, Illustrator, or a string of compy's to render that beautiful 3d movie you just made; you're gonna use a mac. Yes, it is the same hardware, but in different configurations, with software that optimizes the hardware differently (and in some cases better ways).

Of course it is true that Window's is much better for playing games (namely because it's the only OS that games are released for); it's not always better all the time. Remember computers are made for more than just porn, current, and video games.

    • I AM RELAXED RAW RAW RAW

Seriously though I'm not angry, my text just makes it seem that way. I type the same way I talk, and if you heard me speak you could tell that I'm not angry. Although I'm not seeing how my last post was a rant.

By the way, I've had the same PC since 2002. Although I've upgraded it quite a bit, the hard drives, which carry the OS, are the same. I've never had a system damaging virus and I've never had to format. So in all probability, in five years, I'll be on the same PC. Albeit with much better hardware. On the other hand, if your mac is a laptop, it likely won't last beyond four years because laptops are really crummy computers.

    • I like how we get excited when this would actually be an old trend compared to those Asian cellphones. They're like 10 years ahead from us.

    • Talk to me in five years when I still have my mac and you're on your third PC. Seriously, you should start a rant blog, because you do alot of it. I see alot of your posts and you're one of the 'angry' ones, even on whatever subjects like this. Relax a little.

    • You do realize that they have the same hardware right? Intel makes apple's CPUs, and ATI and Nvidia's graphics cards go into macs as well. They haven't carefully crafted anything. It's the same hardware for twice the price and half the software.

I'm not hating on apple, I'm just tired of the unqualified support that apple gets. Yes microsoft sucks, but apple is overpriced and useless to a lot of people. Especially for me as a gamer, as apples don't support more than half the games on the market. They're not bad, but they are not particularly special either.

    • saladin.. what decade are you living in? Development for the mac is paralel (and in many cases better) than for the PC.

Sure you're buying cheaper macheins but you have to realize that the retention of value and quality of the product people are paying for in the carefully crafted and engenired hardware that apple produces is worth the price.

      Quit hatin'

    • Entertainment stuff is fine, I'm not a news hawk. But what's new about this? Who cares? It's the same product that was released before, just not broken this time. But it's here already so I guess I'll talk about it.

You don't get any viruses because no one bothers to write them for macs. You also don't get any good open source applications because mac is a closed off OS. Which is good for average users that want their OS to be friendly and easy, but is a nightmare for anyone who wants to do anything beyond what is supplied. It's also way overpriced.

Plenty of phones and devices could do that already before the iphone. My PSP for instance, was already able to do all these things, on top of allowing me to play great games. Skype is even being implemented into PSP's now.

It's also easy to customize my PSP if I want to. What happens if you try to mod an iphone? It locks you out and breaks itself. You're not even allowed to modify your own product.

    • Have you even actually dealt with an iphone Saladin? It's literally a computer in your pocket and I'm sorry that I'm one of those annoying converts but not one of my macs require any kind of virus protection which automatically makes it 10 times better than microsoft.

And I'm sorry. All news and no play would make this a very dull site. Loosen up a little. Yes, the world is crumbling around us, but hey, we can watch Youtube on our Iphones!

    • Although no official announcement has been made, Apple public relations confirmed to Fortune that Steve Jobs will deliver a keynote address on June 9, the first day of the 2008 World Wide Developers conference.

It is widely expected that Jobs will use that speech to unveil the next generation of iPhones, including a so-called 3G model.

“The launch of the new model is imminent,” wrote Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster in a report to clients Monday.

Munster notes that beginning Saturday, May 10, first generation iPhones were unavailable through Apple’s online store in the United States, the most recent sign that the company is clearing inventory in advance of a new release. (Two days earlier, O2 ran out of iPhones in the United Kingdom.) On Sunday Munster called 11 Apple retail stores to check on their supply; five were completely out of stock and one of the remaining six had fewer that five phones on hand.

Munster also alerted his clients to the discovery, first reported over the weekend by MacRumors, of a switch in the latest release of the iPhone 2.0 firmware that will allow users to toggle 3G data ON for faster download speeds or OFF to conserve battery life.

Despite dwindling supplies, Munster still estimates that Apple will ship 1.7 million iPhones in the quarter that ends June 30. That’s because he expects Apple to start shipping the new model in large numbers before the end of the month.

Other signs — including the release of the new Software Developers Kit scheduled for late June and an AT&T Mobile (T) memo canceling staff vacations between June 15 and July 12 (see here) — point to Friday, June 27, as the day the new model will go on sale. That would give Apple four days of 3G iPhone sales before the quarter closes.

“Net-net,” writes Munster, “the initial surge of iPhone sales in June would likely offset the lost sales due to limited availability in May.”

    • "Too" far, not "to" far. =)

Look, I'm sure it's a very fun toy. But look at ten stories below you, don't they seem a bit more important than this #1 spot item?

I mean seriously! This isn't news! It's an advertisement!

The iphone is not the first device that can do all of the things it claims nor is it the best nor is it a NEW item. So this story gets a big fat thumbs down from me. =p

    • I hope iPhone will be available on multiple carriers in the U.S. I refuse to switch back to Cingular because I've had terrible customer service. I feel like Apple could get more customers state-side if they broadened the availability.

      "First version sucked"?

    • How is this news again? Why are we voluntary advertising this useless toy?

Look, the reason they had to release a 2.0 is because the first version sucked. I don't buy into the hype around apple. They're just as bad as Micro$oft.

    • Apple updates their hardware so much it really should be subscription based!

Instead of paying $300 for an iPhone (which will be outdated in 3 months requiring you to pay another $300) they should just give the iPhones away and instead charge people $25 a month -- and allow people to exchange old equipment for new every 3 months.
