Time-Warner customers will have to pay for bandwidth

Image

"This Thursday, new cable Internet customers in Beaumont, Texas will no longer have unmetered Internet bandwidth - they’re guinea pigs in a new pricing scheme being pushed by Time-Warner that will give users between 5 and 40 gigabytes in total monthly data usage (uploads and downloads combined). Data usage over that amount will be billed at $1 per gigabyte. Competitor Comcast is also considering metered bandwidth.

"The goal is to limit average data usage, allowing Time-Warner to get more customers into their existing fiber infrastructure. Since there is little or no competition for Internet connectivity, they don’t have to worry so much about losing customers."

Ah, the joy of cable and internet monopolies.

    • Good... the folks hardest hit will be MMORPG players, ie World of Warcraft players...

Screw them. If you want to play your stupid games and be bandwidth hogs, PAY FOR IT.

Asherp, I have to admit that I only posted it as it applies to Time Warner. There seem to be some companies that are number one in service, value, customer care, etc. Time Warner is not one of them. I don't know much about video games, I do know that I agree with the other posters who state my fears about TO LARGE TO FAIL, restraint of trade and just plain bad behavior.

I am not worried about the poor gamers. I barely have time to do my little Current thing. Thank you though for your insight as it is a free market and we must pay for what we buy...especially when it's frivolous.

I figure I had to bring in the plus side of the event.

I mean, I totally agree that it's skeezy as all get out, especially since they're a monopoly in that area.

    • We screamed last time. Then nothing. If someone would want to change Time-Warner's business practice, they would have to hit them where it really hurts, in their pocket.

If everyone in Beaumont "collectively" dropped service with T. W., it would make them think about what they are doing.

Verizon Wireless has a good alternative, so does Cricket, AT&T and about a dozen other companies that are available anywhere.

They do this, because they can. I hope Com-Cast tries it, they've already lost over 50% of their cable business to Direct TV and Dish Network, I'd love to see them run out of business completely.
