What are the odds this had nothing to do with it? For a species that 'sees' with its ears?

- - By the way - - for anyone else who might be reading this later - - The theory that the 'live fire' exercise may have been responsible for those dolphins' deaths is actually fairly plausible. It is well known that most land animals have very sensitive hearing. How much more sensitive then, must an ocean creature's hearing be? Quite a bit, if you take into account the great depths and distances they have to be able to gauge, and since many of these creatures, like the dolphins, do use sonar (which is, in effect, 'seeing' with their ears like he said), it's also a matter of their heads being that much more sensitive to noise VIBRATIONS than land animals -- so, 12 miles away is probably really NOT THAT FAR away, for a dolphin... not far enough away, by far.

Thanks for sharing omarmung. This kind of news always saddens me but, it's good to know that so many others actually care enough about animals & their habitats to spread the word & try to do something about it. - - Thanks again - - and keep it up.

I'm surprised that no one else has noticed this entry before now. 'What are the odds' indeed... even the U.S. Navy has been known to try to deny that navy sonar (theirs or anyone else's) is killing squid and other aquatic lifeforms. Sure, it could've been the live-fire exercise... or it could've been more sonar from some of the ships, who knows? But for them to try to make it sound like these dolphins just up & commited suicide for no reason is preposterous... of course it was human-noise induced! Human noise-mongering strikes again!
We all love dolphins, don't we? So let's do more to protect them, and ourselves... let's help our military people & our governments to better understand how they can help instead of hurting. Let's educate them and our friends & loved ones every chance we get.
