Tesla building 225-mile electric sedan

Bottom line is, although we will need a price floor for oil so that the industry doesn't collapse entirely, what NEEDS to happen is our nation's big investors need to start catching up with Europe, South America, and especially the Middle East in terms of investing in finding alternative fuel sources.

Currently only 5% of USA's wealthiest people are (significantly) contributing to R&D on new fuel sources/technologies. This is compared to 20% of the Middle East's wealthiest people currently investing. Needless to say we could do more to promote development in this sector. That would allow (force?) the price tags on non-fuel-burning vehicles to drop into a more affordable range, and would accelerate our freedom from reliance on fossil fuels.

So if anyone wants to dodecaduple my salary I'd be happy to make a major contribution...

This is just great! Vhen this comes out along with the Mercedes, Audi, and Beamer I'll have a choice of cars that I would be willing to buy!! No more oil burning cars for me!

why do we need 225 miles?

sustainablejohn, some of can't use bikes. I live in the country 5 miles from the first store, 10 miles from a 'real' town. I would love everyone who can use a bike to please do so, and if you live far out like me get an electric car.

that car is definitely on my to buy list.

even though it's really efficient, there is still so much embodied energy that goes into making the car and disposing of it, recycling it, repairing it, etc.

let's all buy bikes instead, the truly energy efficient transport machine, only a small percentage of the metal needed for a car, and they're much easier to recycle and repair!

in the long run, wouldnt it work out... ridiculously cheaper? because you dont have to buy petrol for it?

The Tesla roadster is my dream car right now. Good to see the sedan is cheaper than the $100,000 roadster.

It's cool, but it's too pricey. Maybe they can cut back on the styling initially so that its a little more affordable?

Hopefully they will be making an under $25,000 model by 2015.

There would be a tendency to call this car a mom and pop killer. An automobile of the high end age, offering the efficiency of a multinational corporation only for the rich, or maybe just the super rich. But remember everybody, the more rich people who buy the product, the cheaper it will become. Tesla will have incentive to improve on its model and reach out to untapped markets when the brand gets rolling. This is the future. Cars powered by fossil fuels will still be around. Until the price of a car like this comes down, the lower income brackets of this country will continue to use fossil fuel powered cars. And that is fine.

There will not be mandates to own such a green vehicle. And if there are, I will fight them. But this is a market adaptation of the highest quality. We should all rejoice, even if we all can't afford one yet.

Too expensive for us! And it will take several years for many of the EVs in the works to roll out.

Awesome! Tesla has been my favorite car company for years, and they still are. I hope they keep making gorgeous electric cars for the next 200 years.
