Unfortunately sources say that the announcement won't concern the discovery of life, past or present, but will be about the potential for life to exist on Mars.
Once The White House, the guardians of all that is interesting, give the go ahead, we could hear the information in mid August, so keep your eyes peeled for updates. Let the speculation commence!

If the White House has been briefed before the media and the public, it's got to be something big, something important, something totally unexpected. A couple or so weeks ago, the media did say that the soil analysis showed that life could be sustained on Mars, that certain of our plants would thrive there, so that's not it.
Back in 1996, scientists examining a meteorite that originated from Mars (Meteorite ALH84001) found evidence for primitive bacterial life on Mars (see link).
So, whatever it is that Phoenix Lander has discovered, it is likely none of the latter two but something much more significant and important - so significant and important that the president has to be informed first and for the White House needing a couple of weeks to release (or not) that information to the press and the public.
