50 Million people reinvent themselves?!
I think this totally has to do with the media picking at someone's self esteem. why can't people be happy for who they are and enjoy what life has to offer?
Actually living! If the pentagon is helping in creating virtual worlds they are just adding fuel to this fire.
No good Uncle Sam.. no good at all.

Not really a virtual darker side - bribery, corruption, misdirection, deception - those are just hidden real-world qualities of human nature given technological outlet.
Sadly, when it comes to developing cutting edge technologies it would appear that there is just not enough financial clout available for virtual environments to stand on their own merit without first attracting government funding as a military project.
As a player (not SL or WoW) and supporter of solutions other than warfare, after learning about the development stages of my "game", at first I felt somewhat decieved and conflicted.
My indecision was resolved once rapidly evolving technologies meant that the public side had become self financing and sustaining, and was sold off as a seperate entity, whereupon I took the original "irony" of the situation and made concious decision that my contributions to a game originally developed as a training aid for the US military should now be about peaceful virtual occupation.
