The Canadian government is launching a pilot project that will put ankle monitors on paroled prisoners to track them day and night.

Great idea or crossing the line???

    • Actually the Canadian government had that ankle bracelet program before then decided it was too much of a pain in the ass to keep chasing parolee's who couldn't be at a certain place at a certian time. The fact that they are now re-instating the program probably has more to do with the governments willingness to try and help inmates re-integrate themselves back into society by getting them into half-way houses on early parole: it's cheeper than prison a bracelet in a halfway house is a more positive environment for ex-offenders than prison. Big brother is in
Canada just the same in the form of survailance cameras everywhere, bugged internet and phone lines and you don't really need an ankle bracelet when the cops can find anyone with a cell phone.

    • Key word here being prisoners... not sure when they have ever truly had any privacy rights. For example, the prison has the right to search their mail upon arrival w/or w/out just cause, search their quarters at any given time, they uninate-poo-and shower in front of each other and under guard, and when they are in the "yard" they are being watched from towers, on camera and at eye level. They have no privacy as it is so what will the electronic leash take away other than a little dignity.

wait...that sounds like what dubyah has instituted all across America. We even have motion detectors above public bathroom stalls now...and we are being watched in all kinds of public spaces, constantly being monitored with surveillance cameras everywhere, so why do parolees get to accessorize with those stylish gun metal grey ankle bracelets?

when you are a criminal, you have no dignity. When they have their rights forfeited by convection, you gotta pay. Protection of the public comes way ahead of any scumbags dignity.

    • the story makes them sound kind of risky they're not even sure if it's waterproof. I think the public deserves better protection from convicted criminals.

    • Non-violent criminals should work to repay the victims of their crimes.....be taught trades to help them in their life......Violent criminals that have injured innocent people for no reason should be dealt with in some manner.....if they are going to be placed among the populace.......maybe some type of tattoo on the forehead....a star for each one they have killed......what happens when someone like George Bush has a forehead not adequate to hold all the stars?.......Golden Ruler.......killing only time.......Johnnie Hargrave.......
