Nintendo team up with KORG

So, they've obviously put two and two together, and have announced the company has linked with Korg, purveyors of electronic synths and general production lovliness, to create the DS-10 Synthesizer. A beat-making
Check what the UK press release had to say:
"As you compose, work your way around the synthesizer using the replication of the original KORG MS-10 interface spread across the duel screens of the Nintendo DS. Create the sound of your choice using the Touch Screen: through switching interruptors; modifying drumbeats by drawing marks; or editing the synthesizer tone colour by tweaking knobs and connecting patch cables between the jacks on the Synthesizer Patch Panel, With the ability to save up to 18 different sessions, continue to develop and build electro tunes over time and even connect to fellow musicians' consoles through the wireless connection function to work on a project together."
I'm tempted to get a DS just so I can make tunes on my way to work.

Gunpey for the Nintendo DS and PSP had a very good sequencer/composer as an extra in the game, and Electroplankton on the Nintendo DS was a fun "musical toy" app. Portable machines are ace for this type of application and brands like Korg can only enhance people's perception of them

Very exciting. This has been out in Japan for awhile, and it's nice to see Nintendo officially bringing it to a wider international market.

i agree with logicpocket.. i dont see any bad side to this. its improving our mechanical skills and improving the way we look at sounds and music. it could make us a little more accepting to one another. think of playing your new techno machine and some stranger walking up to you asking what your favorite sounds are. is that such a terrible thing? expand your acceptance!!!

I was expecting to see something cool when I started the video but this thing is just a lame little toy. Oh well :-(

After reading the current post on the DS-10 I did some investigation and asked a few people I know if they had it. One did, and he basically said it's extremely toyish.. Coming from the person that told me this, i'm not even going to bother with it.

Nintendo is really nothing like Apple...
Worst they did was get Sony into the console business and nearly shut themselves out of it by screwing Sony over on the Super Nes CD Rom drive. But in the end they may have the last laugh considering all the money Sony has lost on the PS3...
Apple on the other hand, well... I dunno, they seem to have turned themselves around and are now a driving force in the portable mp3 and video player/computer industries.

I'm glad the gaming industry is going in the direction of more music games, kids are better off learning music through a gaming system, rather than being forced by a teacher or parent.

How does one get an invention like this off the ground?
Are there any companies out there that are looking for a fresh approach to musical design? This is a good start but I want to take it to the next level.
I have so many ideas about digital musical products, does anyone know of grants to develop technologies like this?
I'm ready to change the way the world makes music. Who's with me? Apple? Microsoft? Nintendo?

Based off of what I saw at E3 Nintendo is really trying to push the DS over the wii. As someone pretty involved with videogames I find this somewhat dishearteneing, since the wii has such potential for continuing game franchises (some of which they have already done like mario, zelda and metroid). The main reason I think that Nintendo is focusing so much on the DS is because they're actually being bought for girls/women. At E3 they said that their sales from the last year were around 51% to 49% men to women for the DS. Women gamers are an ever increasing market and with the addition of features like a possible cookbook game/program and real time updates in airports of arrivals, departures and cancellations I can see the DS being sold in huge quantites (maybe 2 ipods per DS?). The recent advent of muscial games (though there were games such as amplitude and frequency which were virtually the same thing years ago) has led to guitar hero for the DS and now this KORG thing. I can't wait to see it and all of Nintendo's daring progressions.

To be honest, having owned a stupid number of synthesizers, used same stupid amount of software as well as having messed with not only Gameboys and modded NES's that can produce music made with custom software as well as owning the original Korg MS-10 and MS-20 (modular synth: 10/20)...... I'd rather probably mess with this DS software than go through the utter mess that is the MicroKorg's interface. Grid programming for the loss :(
From the video posted in this topic, I can't really get a good idea as to what the DS-10 software can accomplish but if they say it has an MS-10 among other synths included/emulated to be used on the DS screen, that would be a great addition to any electronic performance.
I'm already seeing purist Gameboy/chiptune producers shunning this move by nintendo though.

Wow... I've never been a big music- videogame fan... But I wonder if there's something to this... Maybe I should give up all of the real instruments I play for a DS... Has anyone started a seriously dedicated GH, RB, or Singstar band yet?
lmfao

Actually, yes there is a serious GH band... although it's using a modded setup in conjunction with Max/Msp and the game controllers to do rather interesting expressions.

Here you go. Although it's not using the Guitar hero/rock band game itself, it is a good example of what people are doing with the controllers to be used as midi/cc controller.
