Scientists get death threats over Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, where particles will begin to circulate around its 17 mile circumference tunnel next week, will recreate energies not seen since the universe was very young, when particles smash together at near the speed of light.
Such is the angst that the American Nobel prize winning physicist Frank Wilczek of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has even had death threats, said Prof Brian Cox of Manchester University, adding: "Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat."
The head of public relations, James Gillies, says he gets tearful phone calls, pleading for the £4.5 billion machine to stop.
"They phone me and say: "I am seriously worried. Please tell me that my children are safe," said Gillies.
Emails also arrive every day that beg for reassurance that the world will not end, he explained.

Ok, one thing bothers me about this debate over the LHC. The "sane" ones are telling us that very large numbers of cosmic rays are constantly bombarding us and yet no black holes? If that's true, why spend billions to reproduce something that is occurring in large numbers already? All right, I get it, so the collisions are easier to find. And there is no global warming, and nuclear reactors are safe, and mercury in vaccinations does not cause autism... Sure. I hear you.

Bravo Robroy1. Finally some with some common sense. And Pvl1 when was the last time that Congress ever spent that kind of money on the people. Just be glad the money is spen where it will do some good. Withot particle accelerators there would'nt be any MRI machues and many other medical devices and this includes many other technical devices. Soon Nanotechnology will be on the lips of everyone and very likely inside of everone too.

im kind of worried about this. like im not freaking out, i mean really it doesnt matter, if we die, hopefully ill die a funny death. But you have to look at it this way.
This isn't rocket science, its something far more dangerous and serious. And let's say that maybe in some spot on the 17 miles, that something hits the circle thingy, and it messes it up.
oh what are the odds, blah blah blah. If OJ can get off, all hell can break loose too. What if even a computer gets too hot and does the wrong calculation, im sure that they put that into thought, but to what extent?
lastly, those 4.5bill could have been spent on something much more useful imo.

I dont know what to feel . . . for some reason the words "behold, the power of the atom. . . and the key to universal knowledge" inspires my imagination and curiosity. . . but at the same time I have a little concern, is humanity ready?
Funny. . . this could be "The Ark of the Covenant" and "Pandoras Box" within one "enclosure" . . . like opening a box and finding both of them. . . what do you do?

If this machine has this capacity for destruction I hope it never falls in the hands of Bush and Co. or the Pentagon. I would not worry because I seriously doubt it has that kind of capacity, unless all of the people involved with its developement and operation are on a mission of suicide. That would be alot of people. But I am sure there war mongers have thier eye and moles on the inside.

I have, just this week read on the internet that there is a large group of people who insist the earth is flat. One of these people is a computer engineer. Now you can see that the human race is an acronym for stupid animal. I am probably one in a million who looks at it in a very different way. Human species contribute nothing to the universal good they leave nothing on earth but a big pile of manure. The only thing we are contributing to earth is violent wars, land red with blood and criminal cabals controlling the world seeking total control. Humans slaughtering each other under orders from their criminally minded leaders. I think that the collider does contribute to earth and to the universe and those who oppose it are criminally insane. If you are a Christian just pray to God and everything should be perfect. Everyone else just stick your head between your legs and wait for the sun to rise. This may sound crude, but with a world filled with religious fanatics, and leaders who talk to god to justify war and war mongers and idiots what else can be said? Lets play "particle collision".

Hi clay -- as far as I can tell, scientists are trying to recreate the conditions they think were happening at the creation of the universe (Big Bang), that is, particles colliding at the speed of light. They haven't been able to get particles to go that fast in a controlled experiment as yet, so this big machine is just to speed up the particles, I think.
Now, WHY are they wanting to know this?? -- who knows, except to say that scientists are like that -- they want to know everything about everything... :D

well, its a fucking HUGE particle accelerator, but other than that i can't tell you much cuz i don't know enough about particle physics. But it has something to do with unifying the theories of the forces of the universe, (electromagnetism, strong nuclear etc.) But it is mathematically possible that this machine will create a black hole :)

firstly its not being properly turned on this wednesday. the particles won't start being fired till later this month.
to chuck in a couple more facts i believe it can only run at night as they use power from the national grid and when it is turned on it will use a 1/3 of the power from the swiss national gird - 4 years ago

Some mind-blowing facts about the experiments:
The energy that is concentrated in a tiny volume is equivalent to that of two elephant herds, each with 120 members, running toward each other at top speed in the Savanna.
While the experiments are ongoing, the CERN computer centre will be engulfed by a data tsunami: the information received per second is equivalent to the text printed in all books in every library worldwide
There will be an average of 600 million collisions per second. Only a fraction of it is of any interest and, on average, only one collision in every 200,000 will be saved.
Regardless, 20 billion snapshots will accumulate every year, all of which need to be evaluated in detail.
