Spore angers creationists

Image
purplefox
Creationist groups are complaining that the newly-released Spore has an overly heavy emphasis on... you guessed it - evolution. Some groups are now even lobbying to get it banned, saying, "this entire game is propaganda aimed directly at our children to teach them evolution instead of creationism." Interestingly, TechDigest points out that the way in which 'evolution' works in Spore is actually far from how neo-Darwinism would explain it, and is much closer, ironically, to the Creationist model. Shiny Media's evolutionary biology correspondent explains:

"I understand that it's only a game and I would never criticise Spore for this but it did make me grimace and suck air through my teeth like a plumber doing an estimate on your bathroom to think of all the people out there who might think that Spore is an accurate account of how evolution works. "

"Several times in the Creature Stage I made huge differences to my beasties when I found they were getting the crap kicked out of them on the plains. I went from two-foot, blue spotted singing and dancing animals to giant green murder machines in one generation and it wouldn't have been a problem if you didn't then see one hatch directly from the egg of another."

"See now, for my money, this is a closer depiction of Creationism than Neo-Darwinist evolution. One of the classic reactions you get from someone who disputes evolution is "Yeah, but when have you ever seen a monkey turn into a man" or such. Of course, we all know that evolution is a very subtle process taking millions of years and so what Spore has done is represent a rather instanmatic Creationist version of how it's done."

    • thats just b*s*. the game still acknowledges a creator, just because the gamer is the creator making the decisions, the game does not deny the idea of someone/something/some creator to be making the evolutionary progress. people need to wake up and just play the game and deal with the fact that the bible isnt all FACT.

    • Why must all religions insist that everyone else must join them. Believe whatever you want as an individual and let others think for themselves. Frankly, Religions seem to be dictatorships in my opinion, and only ever lead to war and suffering in the world

Its not as if there was a banner in the game saying "the process of evolution in this game is of fact" lol

    • Critical philosopher Sam Harris, author of The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason, offers a cogent outline of the dangers inherrent within the ID movement. While the portion of the presentation that he actually discusses the ID movement is brief, maybe 4 minutes or so, he is frighteningly concise and articulate in pointing out the dire ramifications that that this movement has had on both the classroom environment and across the gross politcal spectrum

      "this entire GAME..."

As stupid as it is, i saw it coming since I read the 1st news on Spore earlier in the year.
It's not teaching kids anything that isn't the truth.

Evolution is life, creationism is a Christian ideal, so if Christians don't like it, they dont have to play it.

DONT BAN IT and ruin it for the rest of us.

      Stupid people worry me... =(

    • This is the link to the blog that TechDigest quotes. Read the end of today's post:

"But the Bible teaches us that God was not done with man. For we were His creation and He then spoke to Noah in Genesis 8:21-27 after the flood.
      21. The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never gonna give you up.
      22. Never gonna let you down.
      23. Never gonna run around and desert you.
      24. Never gonna make you cry.
      25. Never gonna say goodbye.
      26. Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.
      27. Never truly believe anything you read on the Internet. There will always be cases of Poe's Law."

This particular blog, is a joke.

    • Evolutionist Propaganda? One I doubt evolutionist is a word since the -ist would suggest that it's a social or political movement. So does the propaganda part. It like saying your spreading your gravatationist propaganda. Its like telling your political views to a rock, science just is.

Yes, but you see, we're comfortable with the personal responsibility that comes with living in a free society.

Creations, aka "socially retarded people" prefer to have the government cover their eyes and ears from anything that would challenge their worldview for them.

I don't understand why they can't just quietly be in denial of reality like most Republicans/Democrats.

    • I really doubt that creationists are actually angry although they may feel some cultural resistance to the game. But I'm sure they all understand that it's a game, otherwise you'd see em pissed off at Too Human or any other game that doesn't fit into their absurd vision of the world.

A couple of bloggers? Eh. What can you expect from blowhards?

I think the fact that the game HASN'T seen that much resistance is a sign of good progress. There may be a stubborn section of this country who, despite the evidence, will believe whatever the hell they want. But science, education and society rolls on without them

Part of the reason they lose so consistently I think is because institutions are catching onto their game. They're starting to realize that they are using the same arguments over and over and over again even after being refuted decades ago and so they typically aren't given credence even by activist judges.

Half the time, it's the company planting these stories, otherwise the narrow-minded would never find out about them. And then there's the hunter/gatherer narrow-minded who search out society's ills as part of their creationist crusade-if it ain't in the bible it ain't true or cain't exist. I know if if I still held onto everything the nuns tried to beat into/teach me, I'd be all messed up about the Lord too.

Evolution happens quickly and in steps. Quantum leap forward in design. This leap is made possible by 'The Ghost in our genes'.

We need to rid our politics, media and academia of these extremist who view the world either extremely left (atheist/materialist) or extreme right (Religion freaks)

Not necessarily. What caused the big bang? Was it two hyper dimensional membranes bumping against each other. Or a black hole exploding and if so what created that.

The last 100 or so years of science has been proving that there is an intelligence in nature that is far from random. Some intelligent force is behind evolution.

There is more to the world than what we know. We are on the verge of a major paradigm shift from thinking the world is round to knowing it's a hypersphere.

This new dimension of thought is opening us up to the wisdom of the ancients and providing a framework for all spirituality and paranormal phenomena to be scientifically understood and explained.

There is a God. He's just more than what religion explained. To deny that is to deny...reality.

The creationist are right. They just refuse to accept that the tool of the creator is evolution.

    • NeoDotCom:

Uh, no there hasn't. There is, at this point, no evidence for a "creator." None whatsoever. I have no idea where you're getting this shit from. All evidence points to naturalistic causes, not guided by anything.

The ONLY acceptable answer to what caused the big bang is "I don't know."

And THAT is a perfectly acceptable answer.

If you want to believe in god or gods, that's fine. If you want to think god or gods guide our fate and made the laws of the universe, that's fine too.

But to take that IDEA, and say that it's supported by EVIDENCE and THEN to take it one step further and say that it's TRUE and that denying it is foolish, is completely fucking stupid.

The wisdom of the ancients was in SCIENCE.

We don't need it, we are a technology race and we have been so for a100+ years, time to cast down you small little god. I don't believe in banning things, if people what to waste a life on delusional pursuits let them, just don't give the aimless twats a voice or a platform, time to evolve. I piss on your God's.

Its sad, but its radical thinking like this that is turning kids away from being interested in science. I was at the Spore launch party and was lucky to hear Frank Drake speak about the declining interest in science and his hope that games like Spore will re spark and interest in kids.

Personally I think children should be taught that you cannot get more secular than religious thought and to assume folks living 2000 years ago who didn't even know why it rained somehow figured out what started the universe(god) is not likely... We should try not to condemn the FEARFUL however... after all condemnation is a RELIGIOUS idea!

    • If you play the game and design your own little creature, leaping mysteriously through elements of evolution that simply cannot be explained, then this is more about creation. whether it is intelligent or unintelligent design, that's the real question that the game hinges on in my eyes. Leave it to chance and your creature dies. Put purpose in to it's being, and give it remarkably specific characteristics, then it lives. interesting concept.

i think that even a child or teenager will realize how absurd the required evolutionary changes are in this game.

yet another simple example of the overwhelming evidence for intelligent design. great game, and in fact great in teaching kids about creation!

If there was a purely evolutionary computer game, you would just have to sit and watch chaos unfold and while this is (most likely) how life developed, it is probably more fun to have a go at being god!

Any Creationist who seriously believes that their child will base their entire theory of evolution and life on a video game needs to be flailed with a tack hammer. For that manner if ANY parent that allows their child to base their entire theory of life and evolution on a video game deserves the same. Parents teach your children YOUR knowledge and beliefs, ground them to YOUR ideals and then maybe you wouldn't be so scared of losing them to outside influences.
