Gamers are not fat loners, study says

The findings of a research published today in the New Scientist may debunk the gamer stereotype, i.e., a smelly, overweight couch potato.

The researchers surveyed "7,000 players of the massively multiplayer online game (MMO) EverQuest 2 [...] about their offline characteristics, their motivations and their physical and mental health".

It turns out that the gamers are fitter and do more exercise than ordinary people: "the results suggest that adult gamers have an average body mass index of 25.2, compared to the overall American average of 28".

However, the study also suggests they may be less healthy mentally.

    • Any gamer coulda told you that! Geez.

Although this study was only done on EQ morons. MMO people tend to be total zombies. They're not really even gamers, they're more like addicts. Gamers play EVERYTHING. MMO people tend to only become sidetracked for like, a day, with other games.

Go poll people that play FPS's or RTS's, you won't find zombies there. Maybe a lil spacy, but certainly not mentally out of shape.

Who says the people surveyed were truthful? Do they really exercise or did they put in their ideal weight instead of their real weight.

lol, Do you have that much of a need for the stereotype? Most gamers are not overweight man. Go to a cyber cafe, you'll see more meatheads than fat asses.

Considering that they are using a BMI index, I'm pretty sure this wasn't a questionnaire. They actually went out and surveyed these people.

I really meant that as more of a criticism of the survey (I'm a female gamer, so I know what you mean). I've learned from my psychology class to always take surveys with a grain of salt. Most people are a little embarrassed of their bodies even if they're not fat and usually tend to fudge it. Your drivers' license weight comes to mind. ^_^

The link is dead so I didn't read that they actually did surveys in person. My bad.

    • My sons are gamers. Physically they keep in shape. My youngest needs to improve on the mental part. I can agree on that in part. When it relates to the games they are intelligent. However when you take him away from the screen, my nieces could challenge him when it related to any topic outside the games. Need to expand the mind and not have tunnel vision.

    • No loners !

Just the ones that sit in the back and study !

The ones that cruse below the radar to find the true facts, hell aren't almost all the gamers on here ?

We are not loners, we may be nerds and geeks but we travel like nomads and wait to surface.

      PEACE
