It's worth insuring these expensive little devices, writes Nick Galvin.

Today's Troubleshooter comes with an R18+ rating due to its horrific and violent content. It will certainly prove upsetting to those who have recently started a love affair with Apple's shiny (and, in our opinion, near-perfect) new iPhone.

Even if you have yet to fall for this pocket-sized tech-bauble, it would be a very stony heart indeed that wasn't touched by Lachlan Tsang's nightmare tale.

"Recently, I dropped my iPhone," Tsang writes. "Despite it being a fall of only knee height, the entire front face shattered. The phone wasn't insured, yet I wasn't warned by the carrier that Apple's repair costs for any physical damage done to the phone, accidental or not, were $379. That is the price Apple charges for any out-of-warranty repairs for the 16GB iPhone.

    • I had the apple protection plan and it didn't cover my damages, but I could exchange mine for 250.00 dollars. This was a few days before the the 2nd generation phone came out, so I waited to buy one of those. In the end I canceled my AT&T subscription because I was put on a waiting list for the new phone and they wouldn't suspend my bill until my new phone came in. So I ended up paying for three months of not being able to use my service and a 175.00 cancelation fee. Thanks AT&T your such a great company!

    • Can I purchase any kind of insurance which protects against damage caused by a drop as described in the article? My carrier covers defects which may become apparent for the first year, after that it's between me and Apple.

    • I bought the Protection Plan when I bought mine, the original first gen. I've had it replaced for free once. I would most definitely recommend insuring them.
