Prof Hawking, 66, will have held the position of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics for 30 years at the time of his retirement.
Isaac Barrow became the first holder of the post in 1664, and notable successors have included Charles Babbage, Sir Joseph Larmor and Sir James Lighthill.
Despite being almost completely paralysed by motor neurone disease, Prof Hawking became one of the world's leading experts on gravity, black holes, and the origins of the universe.

'Prof Turok claimed the university "sometimes does not seem to appreciate how lucky it is" to have Prof Hawking.'
I think we, in general, don't appreciate how lucky we are to have such a brilliant mind held in such a fragile body, with us still - at 66!

Way to go, Hawking. You've done more than your share for humankind and the universe. You can relax now!

Gosh. Babbage, Newton, Hawking, amongst others... this is going to be a difficult position to live up to. I also didn't realise Hawking is already 66!

Ever professor who holds the position traditionally has to retire and hand it over to somebody else when they reach 67 years of age. Apparently, Professor Hawking will continue to work at the uni in a honorary role.
Another interesting fact in the article is that his diary is fully booked until 2012. How on earth does he do it? I was also always a little bemused the man had an affair. Believe me, it's not easy seducing with a robot voice...

Stephen Hawking is an incredible human being. Check out this Raw Intel of when he experienced zero-gravity for the first time.
