The world-leading silicon cell is now six per cent more efficient than the next-best technology, according to Professor Green, Executive Research Director of the ARC Photovoltaic Centre of Excellence.
The boost in efficiency is due to the technology's redefinition of the available light spectrum allowing it to capture more energy at its extremes.
The new technology inches closer to the theoretical limit of 29% efficiency for this generation of solar cells.
Commercial production is already in negotiations and could soon make low cost, high output solar energy an even better way for individuals and businesses to reduce their environmental impact.

Add this to LED and CFL lighting, light pipes, and good insulation, you get some real conservation.
Then we need to start looking at non-AC computers and appliances. A friend of mine is experimenting with adding low-voltage wiring to his home for exactly this purpose. We only needed AC to make it easier to transmit the voltage down long power lines, if we have our own panels then we can bypass the power conversion and use DC directly and efficiently.

DC, direct current, is what nearly all electronic devices actually run on. AC, alternating current, is used to get the power from the generators down the lines to the homes, then every device has a section called a power supply in it to convert the AC into the DC it really needs. Of course that conversion process is inefficient, wastes a lot of power. If we used DC directly, we'd use a lot less power, AND our devices would cost less because of all the extra hardware we wouldn't need.
