Students admitted to copying online material and handing it in as their own. The survey also showed that a mere 1 in 20 students have been caught.

No, what you do is get a B student who is a university graduate who is stuck working at Starbucks and bribe him or her to write your paper for you for $1000 to get you a B grade. A B grade paper does not stand out enough to be remembered for the student to be caught.

Isnt everything you write plagarism? Someone invented these words which we construct into setences. Nothing is really original or unique about what we write and say; I dont see why people are so upset about college students plagerising.

"Nothing is really original or unique about what we write and say" Disagreed!
Just because someone made up the letters and words doesn't mean that we 1) can't make up new words 2) can't make up new meanings for the same words and 3) put words together in a new way. - 3 years ago

Is it possible all the pressure of these high priced universities have something to do with this?

Everyone wants the easy way out. No one wants to work for anything and still get paid. This is way companies should not put so much emphasis on a college degree. I know more smart people who didn't go to college and even more idiots who have. Aren't most of the brains on Wallstreet Ivy League grads. Well there you go.

Your right!
I know plenty of brilliant people who never set foot on a university campus. By comparison I know ton’s of M.B.As who are complete IDIOTS!
My grandmother had a term for people like that:
"Educated Fools"
LOL
I think it all boils down to having a healthy amount of common sense and the will and desire to learn.

College is about getting good grades and getting a degree, not about learning skills. Of course kids plagiarize and cheat.

This really isn’t a shock. Anyone who has been to college knows that a great deal of students at all schools plagiarize and cheat. And students at “privileged” institutions can get away with a lot more than us average University folk! After all these historic colleges have a reputation to protect. The LAST thing they need is for the world to discover their top students may have cheated their way to the top.
In some of these elite schools it’s actually common place to drop a class after taking the final exam! So I can get an “F” then choose to wipe the whole class, awful grade in tow, from my transcript? Sign me up! LOL

this is a disgrace and unfair to the people who do well without cheating. they should put some more strict rules in place

Guess University going doesn't = smart people automatically like some people profess.
I have been accused of plagiarizing, but I have never done it and never, ever do it in the future. My thoughts are mine. My writing is mine. I will not sample from someone else without siting where it's coming from. If there is one thing that just isn't possible for me to do it's plagiarize.
Oh and boy do I ever think low of those that do it.

That's insane! could Cambridge be putting too much pressure on their students or is this true of all unis? Or are they still mostly just letting in rich public school kids who never did their own work in their lives?

I plagiarise ScratchyPants! I agree and can't word it any better.
Spending lots of (someone's) money to attend an Ivy League school only to use someone else's work to pull through sounds like the American way. I didn't say it was a GOOD way.

Well, look at it this way, they're all qualified to be either President or Vice President now. You have to look for the silver lining.

These are supposed to be institutions of higher learning. I'm floored that students are still so caught up in the mindset of the "easy way out." What happened to creativity? What happened to using the facts and constructing something of your own? What happened to hard work - the blood, sweat, and tears?
The horrible possibility is that these students will continue these behaviors as adults and steal/cheat just to get ahead in life.
