MySpace & MTV to profit from piracy

From now on, when MySpace subscribers upload copyright-infringing footage, the usual take-down notices will be substituted by advertisements and original content from the parent company (in this case, MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon), thus generating revenue.
"This is a game-changer," said Jeff Berman, president of sales and marketing at MySpace. "We're going from a world of no to a world of yes while protecting the rights of the copyright holder."
It certainly is an interesting idea to protect copyrighted material and I can see YouTube using a similar system in the near future. But I guess that the question is, would you rather see the usual "Sorry, the video is no longer available" or an unsolicited commercial?

Yeah, but if you download the streaming content from youtube or myspace, the ads aren't there anymore. Guess it doesn't matter, since they're still getting paid.

Youtube is also rolling out something similar, wherein video uploads are scanned against official content, and content creators are notified of pirated versions on the site. Then, content creators have the option to profit somehow (can't remember the details).

CNN usually has rights to post their media but they still put ads before their video clips. I've already gotten used to it. If someone has figured out how to profit from that, props to them I guess.

I'd sit through that. I'm willing to give up some time to see the content I want to see.

Keep them short, on point and as funny as the Sonic and AT&T and you can do this as much as you like.

Perhaps if France's new laws work for them, we'll see a FAR bigger change than more advertisements.

it then becomes pirating no longer- instead it becomes piggybacking. you're giving content owners and their advertisements a piggyback ride to your niche of the net.

Advertisements are the key to our current media piracy problem as long as they can see that the ads are actually working. The big compromise between businesses and consumers is no longer a matter of how much we're willing to pay (because we've made it clear that most simply won't pay), but how many ads we're willing to put up with. So far, this is looking great for consumers. If you watch a show on Comedy Central via your TV, you have to deal with 8 minutes of commercials for every half hour. If you watch the same shows online, you get about 1 minute of commercials. Kill your TV; love your internet.

Looks like old media is finally figuring out a way to have new media work in its favour. I think it's a smart move on the part of advertisers. Of course, I don't advocate being bombarded by ads in yet another location... but it was only a matter of time, really.
