Working with Philips Color Kinetics, Kamen is using his island domain as a showcase for energy-efficient LED lights. He is replacing all of the traditional incandescent lights inside and out of his North Dumpling home with LED lights, which will allow it to run exclusively on wind and solar power generated on the island. Philips estimates the move from incandescent to LED lights will cut energy consumption by 70 percent. With new lights added--outside the home and in the basement--total energy consumption will be reduced by half.

LEDs are nice because they don't contain mercury like CFLs and are even more energy efficient, while lasting longer.
When the demand grows, the prices will drop.

I think LEDs should be promoted over the CFLs i'm sure there is some sort of money trail that thinks the money should go to the CFLs and that's why they are promoted more
I always wonder about CFL's and if the studies include the manufacturing cost differences as well as the disposal costs and what happens when one is broken in a home.

Anyone here do research on spatial economics? There is and always has been a spatial pattern (where they live) with people who own the rights to more than 7+ patents. These people congregate in bulk and are simply innovative geniuses. This guy is obviously one of few men (not one of the thousands that have 7+ patents) who have a mind for supreme innovation. To live on this guy's island for a weekend would be a dream come true.

To the guy who said Segways are useless, well the actual Segway is useless, but the wheelchair is totally kewl. For someone in a wheelchair can now walk up stairs and downstairs and puts them at eye level to walking people. That is pretty neat.
I kinda like is idea of an island with it's own constitution and it being his own country, but does that mean he is not an American citizen?
Oh well, it pays to be filthy rich so you can have articles written about you and have people like me making fun of you because....well, because I'm totally jealous of you and your money, that's why.

And you are now the proud owner of the most useless response ever created. This post was not about segways. Don't focus on the wrong part of the story.

I definitely agree. I have seen LEDs utilized in some of the coolest ways. To find out that they use up to 70% less energy than the regular incandescent bulb, makes me love them 70% more than the regular incandescent bulb.
