2.7 billion Southwest border fence hits 500-mile mark

Image

Do we really need to spend millions more on a fence right now? Thanks to the US economy, immigrants are leaving the US via the southern border, not trying to get in illegally.

>
"The government has completed 500 miles of fencing along the Southwest border, 170 miles short of its goal."

"Congress has set aside $2.7 billion for the fence since 2006. But there's no estimate how much the entire system — the physical fence and the technology — will cost to build, let alone maintain."

"The fence along the U.S.-Mexico border is not intended to stop illegal immigration altogether, but make it more difficult for people to enter the U.S. illegally, Bush administration officials say."

    • I suppose the government wants to destroy its self in the least amount of time. By blocking out "illegal" immigrants, they are practically saying that they will risk life and limb building structures and reparing broken pipelines. That would be suicide for the U.S.

    • yeah I think not paying taxes of McDonalds and other things like that isn't paying into state tax of in social security , are you just uneducated or unemployed too? From what you messaged me it sounds like you have never had a pay stub to look at and see where that money that is deducted from your check and hard earned American pay is going too.

    • When a fence and other efforts are used from the onset, crime doesn't have to be combated on our American streets later where the cost is much higher. Its not about immigration, its about security. It seems the feeling here is help illegal immigrants at the expense of a nation.

    • yes the reason why it is a good idea too keep these people out is b/c the are taking low income jobs for under the table pays where no taxes are being paid, and this happens all of the time and its hurting our unemployment rate and also not helping the other honest people who are paying taxes like me. Do you understand why we would spend millions to do this if we are getting raped by these hundreds of thousands of under the table thief’s for more then the cost of this fence by almost ten fold? Maybe you’re not as educated and to fast to post your null ideas.

It is a shame a person like you doesn't know me. I am half American and half German and I attended college in Munchen. And I lived in the shadow of the Berlin Wall when I was younger. Too bad you reply with ignorant remarks about thinking you are smart. Unfortunately for you- I guess speaking before you think is a trait you failed to lose while in History class. Just sad and pathetic by you. And by the way many minorities live in Europe too just like in America or did you not pay attention while in school.

    • I almost feel like I am going to be living back in Berlin all over again. I thought that governments were going to learn from the mistakes of the past. Many in Texas and Mexico are not happy about this fence.

    • If the Great Wall could not stop mongolians, I highly doubt a fence will stop immigrants.

Not only that, but our economy is so shitty right now, they're leaving this country.

    • Fences with minefields and snipers have worked in the past.
Fences by themselves stand no chance.
Good luck once the economy recovers.

    • A simmilar structure went up in Berlin, 1961 and one standing in Palestine today.

I wonder if the U.S. is using immigrant labor to put the wall up? (very likely)

      Fuck Manifest Destiny!

    • This has become a 2 part letter concertinaing "The Fence " and "The decimalization of marijuana" OK First and foremost, No we don't need to spend more on the fence, what we can do is start assigning troops in our armed services to patrol the borders and shoot on sight. This way everyone will know that when you try to sneak into another country without permission that its called an invasion. This will keep our service guys with a job and have less people on the unemployment lines. This will also stop some of the drug trade, and then lets put it up for a VOTE in 2009, The decimalization of marijuana, this way we can release a half million to a million people being held on petty drug charges. Another war ( The War on Drugs ) that we can never win all we are doing is filling the court system and the prisons with people. Lets empty the prisons, cutting the cost of more prisons and saving billions of dollars cutting the Federal budget a little bit and family’s can once again take care of there own.

    • I think there's been a misunderstanding. The purpose of the fence is to transfer taxpayers dollars to contractors who are "friends" of Bush and Cheney. It's the same reason we are at war in Iraq.

    • You just said..

"Do we really need to spend millions more on a fence right now? Thanks to the economy, these days people from our southern border are leaving the US, not trying to get in illegally."

Are you honestly suggesting that people along the Mexico border are moving south into Mexico because OUR economy is bad? How in the world do you even justify this?

Asides that though, I do think we still need a few more years worth of immigration. I live in Oklahoma and we basically thrive off of an oil based economy, we need that work force to stay in good shape like we are right now. If oil prices drop down low enough, the majority of our oil workers will go to nonindustrious jobs, or move to the East or West for better opportunities. In the meantime, our oil based economy in Oklahoma would be dead, and we would have an even MORE depleted work force (there's a way higher need for jobs here than there are actual people). Immigration could be good for the border states under a light like this.

But I suppose considering that oil prices are going to keep getting lower, we need a relatively low work force so when the oil industry and work force need goes down, we don't have a surplus of workers and unemployment.

Build the wall, to be safe.

    • Why don't they just hire a bunch of crazy, gun wielding rednecks to sit there and guard the fence. pay them like 5 bucks an hour, and there ya go, no more illegal immigration. I think that would be a major deterrent to illegal aliens sneaking over. I'm sure there would be a bunch of eager, jobless people willing to do it. lol.

    • Drug cartels and the violence and murder they bring are spilling over our borders. There is no doubt a big problem here. Whether a fence is the solution hasn't been determined but something must be done - quickly.

    • this is the biggest waste of money ever all meant to appease xenophobic rednecks who have brains the size of peas.

fences can't even keep a dog from leaving your yard. how dumb do they think Mexican's are?

also, I'd like to see how the US gov't would react if Canada built a fence along their border with us.

    • I need a fence like that.

Mine's made of wood. The neighbor kids keep climbing over it instead of using the gate every time their football lands in my yard. I'm afraid that the kids are going to break my fence; some of the kids these days are grossly overweight.

I need a fence like that.
