New train goes 220mph with no centralized engine

Image

This month, the French company Alstom Transport is testing its brand new “very high speed” train, the AGV (or Automotrice à Grande Vitesse), on live tracks in Eastern France. Unlike most trains, which have a single engine car in the front or back, the AGV has a series of distributed motors underneath the passenger carriages, which saves space and allows the train to carry 20% more passengers. (Notice in the photo below how little space there is from the nose of the train to the first passenger seats.)

The AGV is being tested over 12 nights this month on the Eastern high-speed line, between the Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine stations, at its ideal speed of 224 mph. In comparison, the American high speed Acela train travels at a top speed of 150 mph.

    • I hear ya RCS, its hard to know what to believe these days but the majority of the stuff in the Zeitgeist movies I'd have to say is pretty spot on. Us humans can do anything, we have the potential to explore the universe if you wanted to only thing keeping us from doing it is ourselves. Money, greed, corruption, etc, etc, etc.

I used to be a die-hard Obama fan too but if I really search my feelings and am honest with myself he's just another politician too. He's selling hope and change but the truth is, he's a cheer leader for the real leaders of the world the corporations.

I'm tired of filtering through all the garbage, corruption and politics. The only thing I'm sure I can change in this world is myself and my actions. So with that I march on living my life with compassion and speaking only the truth. Unlike Obama's promises of sweeping change I can guarantee through my own actions true change. I'm not special though every one of us has this power.

      Peace,

    • I watched the "Zeitgeist" movie. It is one claim and assertion after another with no genuine documentation to back any of it up. There is, also, some wacked-out leftist politics mixed in with it. Some of the claims made in this film might be true; some might not be. I have no way of knowing from watching the movie.

    • I'm not even sure they leak it out, mind' Seems more like they explicitly withhold it from us for ever more oppressive control

there is a newer Addendum video to Zeitgeist I was surprised to find following that link www.zeitgeistmovie.com

    • Really cool but we have the technology to build trains that travel way faster then that. The problem is the powers that be leak the technology out so they can milk it for the money.

If you haven't seen the Zeitgeist movie I definitely say check it out.

    • Read this article USA, this is what we need to cut down on car emissions. What a great ride from city to city. More people would use this type of train than our antiquated AMTRAK. Bring this across the Atlantic, please!

    • Awesome! This shows that technology can be exciting and inspiring. As I have posted on Current before, this country should have a good, stiff gasoline tax hike, and some of the money should go into building new public transportation systems and new railways. We should have trains just like this one in our major urban corridors between cities here.

    • I'd love a super fast bullet train too! a typical 20-30 mile commute would take less than 10 minutes! It would totally revolutionize life where I live. It's so sad that corporations and our fascist government limit and curb and undermine American grit and ingenuity to honestly compete with other even more modern nations. We have good ideas and they tell us why we shouldn't. =( We should drown all our leaders and do what we want, as we imagine it =P Like with health-care...we could put all these elitist doctors and insurers on salary and if they don't like it, they can start their own practice but they won't have the health market in a strangle-hold anymore. And if enough of them balked, well, we could put put them on the job temporarily anyway like they did with the airline pilots... It's almost like, as Americans, seeing and knowing our shoes are untied, were somehow incompetent or powerless to do anything about it when even a simple solution would get a lot done. *shrug* and we might all look better too doing it =P hehehe

We need a resurgence of revolution like what happened in the Industrial Age, and we need to stop listening to the talking heads telling us not to, or why we can't.

yeah "hope" is barely the beginning of a thing. having the balls to sweep the mofoz standing in our way is quite another I'd guess. We'll see if Obama is man enough to man up and follow through with the greater vision he's promised for a real "change" in America. =)

    • This story makes me long for this kind of development here in the US. We compete with Europe and Japan (sort of) on cars.. why not trains?

I understand that the US is a special case because our country spans a continent, but we really should be pushing advances on trains as well.

    • ChickenTrain:

the US is only a special case because the auto companies were started here and blocked all forms of public transport
theres actually a subway line in LA. but GM or one of the big three bought it before they could start using it.
