Dell says Apple is greenwashing its gear

There's a hot debate out in the enviro-sphere on whether or not Apple is as green as it says it is, or green at all. Well, Dell tends to side with the nay sayers.

Unless you've been under a rock, or are utterly uninterested in computers, you haven't missed Apple's latest ads touting the greenness of its products. Dell, however, says that's a bunch of huff and puff.

Bob Pearson, Dell's VP of Communities and Conversations (you can have a VP for that??), says that Apple is being irresponsible to the earth by making false claims for how green it is and hoping consumers won't notice. Apple, along with Dell and HP, are perceived to be the greenest computer companies, so the two are direct competitors for the up-and-coming greener consumer base.

And now, the blogosphere is abuzz with the latest entry to Dell's blog knocking Apple for what it says are green fake-outs.

    • not something i ever think about is 'how green is my pc' and nor to be honest have i ever noticed any claims of this from any of them so i can only assume this tells you that none of them are very green

    • if you take all the iphones and i pods and imacs and the rest of the icrap and consider that they sell like crazy, you'd figure that all of that is plastic won't decompose well and captain planet won't approve.

    • Hey at least Mac has a video to show what their computer is made of, as well as how it is made.

I got one, and green or not, its effing sweet. It blows my old Compaq out of the water.

    • I think that this is yet another marketing scheme. Mac's are doing extremely well now that Microsoft Vista proves to be the most horrible development by Microsoft...so far. And Dell just wants a share of the market.

Green or not green, I'd still go with the Apple notebook. Dell's are garbage!...I don't know if its because it runs on Microsoft, or the quality of it is just horrible. Plus, I don't think most people think about how environmentally friendly a laptop is before purchasing it anyway.

Actually, Steve Jobs has been environmentally conscious on at least a small level for some time now. When I visited the headquarters the cafeteria had a compost pile, for example. Maybe Dell has something like that too, but I haven't been to their headquarters.

Personally, I don't care if one is "greener" than the other. I'd prefer companies stop the senseless bickering and do what's best for the environment as promptly as they can.

    • For all that Apple is doing to attract customers by claiming to be greener than any other computer company, the fact of the matter is that Apple computers are better. I'm not just saying this as a devout Apple customer, it's simply true.

There are definitely ways in which PCs have always dominated. PCs are still the computers of business and office networks, but for personal computers, Apple is really starting to take a chunk out of consumer market.

The last thing that PCs, Dell especially, has going for them is that they're cheap. A person can get a laptop for $300. An Apple machine is going to set you back at least $1000 in most cases and that's at least. I just got a new MacBook Pro for $2000. But I know that with this purchase, I won't have to buy another computer for some time. My roommate bought a Dell laptop last year and it already crapped out on her.

The fact of the matter is that you get what you pay for and green or not, you're getting a better machine with a Mac.

    • I dunno. Apple's moved from heavy use of plastic to metals (recyclable), real glass screens (recyclable) and dell is using...plastic. Everywhere. In every line up.

Apple's metal casing on all computers really pushes them towards the greener of the bunch, but the plastic backed iphone was a bit of a kick in the groin. I LOVE my first gen with its metal backing.

On the flip side they have a LOT of excessive packing material; even if it is recycled material it's excessive. You didn't need to use plastic to wrap the cords, cover the screen, etc etc etc.

    • Has anyone actually ordered from Apple? If not, I would suggest you do before saying the story is false. It's not about the purchase, check what it shipped and the parts.

    • the fact that dell vp's have time to blog about their competition should tell you something about their business model... instead of complaining about it, just make a better computer...

and as i type this on my new ultra-green macbook, i'm still happy with my purchase

    • This is just another level of competition and an effort to lure consumers to one side or the other. Remember, sales across the board are suffering so resorting to these "tactics" shouldn't surprise anyone.

There's the issue of moral panic that has taken over our country and if a corporation can take advantage of it in some way, they will.

And Greenpeace is pretty much at the level of an @sshole.

For them you are worse than the dirtiest power plant unless you agree with every single regulation they promote. For them Gore, of all people, was not green enough. OK. Idiots.
