Genetic discrimination now illegal in Illinois

"If you want to learn about your risk for certain illnesses through genetic testing, lawmakers say what you find out is your business. They've banned employers from discriminating against workers because of test results."

...so much for a Gattaca future...
"Gattaca Film: ...a less than perfect man wants to travel to the stars. Society has categorized Vincent Freeman as less than suitable given his genetic make-up and he has become one of the underclass of humans that are only useful for menial jobs."

    • Please spread the word on how important this is for all of us. Companies do use your medical records against you if they can access them, and most large companies do have access to your medical records.

So speak out America, and Vote, and call/email your state and national congressperson.

And when your congressperson doesn't act in your interest, then VOTE THEM OUT.

    • Relatively speaking, it is only a few years since discrimination because of skin colour was outlawed and women still do not have the same opportunities as men in every profession. Many countries in the world still have prejudicial practices against indigenous peoples, parts of India still operate a caste system and tribal conflicts in Africa have caused thousands of deaths in recent years.

This presages a whole new era in prejudice since if your genes do not match some sort of standard then you could be classed as inferior to others who do pass. This would be the first step in legalising eugenics since babies not able to pass the gene test will be put down legally or illegally since they will be of lesser worth.

Genetic discrimination must be made universally illegal now before it gets out of hand.

    • I think it's a good thing that insurance companies would do anything for a buck, including charge you more if you have a B Negative blood type (or whatever it is). You do these tests because they want to find out what their risks are for covering you...if you're more likely to catch cancer, or if you're more likely to die of heart disease. I've never heard of anyone else asking for this type of information, especially employers. This is a good law and some people will benefit from it and maybe this is a way of getting cheaper medical insurance in Illinois

    • This sort of thing cant really be stopped,...slowed maybe, but insurers will begin to give such big discounts to those that "pass the scan" that those who simply refuse to participate will be priced out of the market. Same is true of business but perhaps to a lesser extent.

    • I'm more worried about health insurance companies getting your genetic test results and subsequently denying coverage for certain pre-disposed illnesses or dropping coverage altogether.

    • How reassuring that the evolution in technology particularly in Gene isolation isn't proving to be the chimera challis futuristic films and trends have indicated.
Now we await it's Global role-out and whole hearted adoption. This is one of the few reasons why it's a privilege living in this monumental history making bleeps in the time of humanity.

    • I love Illinois, It is the most bizarre self-contradictory state of affairs. Blegojevich, Obama, In 1982 Illinois were miles ahead with their own version of "homeland security". The "Radiation Police". The Illinois State Troopers broke the story about "radioactive McDonald's Furniture" They thought they had found terrorists or commie spies but in the end the narrative was almost as good. Criminal waste disposal, an X-Ray Machine was sold for scrap, exported to Mexico where it was melted down and recycled in to McDonald's furniture and re-imported all the way to Illinois where A state trooper with a geiger-counter saved McDonald's customers from cancer and impotency. Ta-Da....

    • I agree with the law but to play devils advocate, doesn't the business have the right to know about possible health conditions? Why train someone for a long term career if they might die in a few years?

    • SpaceMoses:

I think it's very problematic when "business rights" trump those of human beings.

I doubt that anyone would be very happy if they were discriminated against for a dream job because of an inherited "possible" heart condition gene, for example.

"Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness " is one of the most famous phrases in the United States Declaration of Independence. These three aspects are listed among the "inalienable rights" of man.
