Officers fired the 50,000-volt weapon at the war veteran after he disappeared from his care home and threatened to cut his throat with a piece of broken glass.
He is the oldest man to have had a Taser used on him.
Police said they had taken the decision to stun him for his own safety.
Read and discus....
Umm........"for his own safety"

haha, another example of why the police shouldnt be armed. Surely a young child could have tackled an 89 year old man. Retards.

why are the elderly considered such a threat that a taser was needed. why not just wait till they run outta steam, or are sleepy to control the situation.

and so that i am not a part of the ungrateful few... im not knocking police. yeah they do risk their lives and they do know that that is part of their jobs. but when is one life more important to the next. just because they 'were in fear for thei life' which is always the excuse afterwards..or 'i thought he had a gun' that shyt doesnt cut it. what if the shoe is on the other foot? would the person at the barrel of the gun be excused for their fear??? i have an old associate now that is in prison bcuz he started shooting when he heard someone trying to take his door down. no police were hurt, but he is in there for attempted murder. maybe he wouldnt have shot if he was notified that they were the police. and another case...a woman won a lawsuit. in lavergne, tn..i think that is whr it was. police had a warrent and went to the wromng house and kicked the door in. they were in black clothes. an elderly man reached for his gun and they excessively shot him as the wife watched. this man was over 70 years old. you know what happened there. .oh, we are orry..we had the wrong house...and they were on paid leave and eventually had their badges took...no charges by the way. it is all of this unnecessary shyt that is causing faith in the law to be broken. not only that, but the fact that there are no consequences and tha tmakes others think less in certain situations...there will always be ANTI-everything if there is b.s. behind it..GOOD DAY

is this another case of excessive force i hear?? im really getting sick and tired of police using unnecessary force..man shot 50 times...had no weapon..police cleared. man killed the other day after a fight on a subway that ddnt concern him...he did everything to show he was cooperating...shot in the back while laying on his stomach hand cuffed..police in my town of tennessee tasered a man that they knew was on l.s.d. he died...no weapon. he was tasered until he fell. if the they had any sense they would have known that his body was not responding bcuz he was high. think of how many times that people get into a dispute and it involves police. what is the first thing that they do...pull their gun and aim for the head. or this new taser thing. the guy from my home town was basicly electricuted to death. and unless the other person has a guun what is wrong with aiming towards the knees or something. if i had a dog and used a stun gun on it because it wouldnt listen to my commands or demands then my azz woud be in jail for inhumane cruelty...what is the difference between the citizan and the police?? a badge and gun. someone on here said it was funny that he got tasered...what if that was you and the reason you got tasered is because you were trying to tell a cop that it was not you that it was the man beside you that caused an incident of fight?? wldnt b funny then. there needs to be severe consequences for things like this. are they there to protect and serve or to inflict fear in the streets. ive gotten to where i do not even want the law involved into any of my issues. you never know who may not make it past the call for help. last thing ..what if hte man had a heart device or if the taser would have killed him?? is him wanting to leave a nursing home for what ever reason worth him getting tasered. him talking about killing himself should have been their cue to call a crisis team or something

I do disagree with what this officer did, however the man was going to kill himself and possibly he didn't believe there was anything else he could do to prevent him from slicing his throat.
However I do disagree that all officers are bad and shouldn't be allowed to carry their firearms or tasers. They should have tasers, taser stories may get on the news but how many lives have they saved by being able to deploy a non-lethal weapon(ya i know it sometimes does kill, but not most of the time). If a cop did not have a taser he would have to draw his gun on the perpetrator.
Also, the media has been getting better on reporting on when a cop makes a mistake. I highly doubt that cops are getting worse; in reality there has probably never been a time where cops had so much scrutiny. Sure we hear about it more, but in the 50's and 60's the cops could and did beat people all the time and they were not questioned on it.

Recently a homeless man from Mexico was shot and killed by a police officer here where I live in the Rio Grande Valley. He was unarmed and was starting a fire during a cold spell we experienced (it's normally pretty warm here, even during the winter).
The incident is being investigated, but I personally saw the man starting the fire and had seen him from time to time wandering town, and I hardly perceived him as a threat against someone twice his size and half his age as the officer who shot him was, and also against anyone who has a firearm, as the officer who shot him did.
It was a shotgun no less! I think cops need additional training in taking down perps or assessing situations they may find themselves in during "routine" calls. They also need to reexamine their roles in society.

I'm so sick of Current pushing all of these anti-cop stories to the top of the home page, what an ungrateful bunch of people. Cops are saving lives by risking their own lives every minute of the day and nobody cares. They would rather just post the stories that are controversial and paint them in a bad light. Pure propaganda. Here are a few links to some stories of cops saving lives. But of course you will never find them on the top of current's homepage.

Police Brutality is becoming more commonplace than serving and protecting. I personally saw a man tasered for a seemingly routine traffic stop with my own eyes.
I'm sure you'd be shocked about some of the things our officers do with 50,000 volts of electricity coursing through your body for a minor infraction of the law.

Yet another reason why tasers should be taken away from law enforcement.
This man could have been persuaded to drop the broken glass aimed at his neck. However the police seemingly do not believe in negotiation or treating people like human beings.
This is no way to treat a war veteran.

Well he should be happy they did not open up with a uzi, at the rate police are killing innocent people in America there needs to be something done. The police are out of control. The police need to have thier weapons taken away from them until they prove they are capable of handling a firearm of anykind. Even a Taser can be a dangerous weapon in the hands of a cop.

The bay area BART shooting is another recent example of excessive force. From what I had been reading lately, most cops get very little practice with their weapons and many are scared of guns having no familiarity with them when they arrive at the academy. Everyone who carries a gun should have as much opportunity as they need to be proficient from citizens to law enforcement. These tasers are designed just like a pistol and very easy to mix up as well. These tasers are more dangerous than law enforcement will acknowledge. Unfortunately it takes many bad occurances before any changes are instituted.
